HICKORY, NC - RF Jordan Akins belted a pair of solo home runs, but the Hickory Crawdads fell to the Delmarva Shorebirds, 7-3, before 877 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Crawdads (18-14, 54-47) struck first in the bottom of the third inning against LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (W, 4-5). RF Jordan Akins led off by rocketing a solo home run to straight-away center field putting Hickory up, 1-0.

Hickory quickly doubled the lead in the bottom of the fourth. CF Zach Cone led off by belting a solo shot over the left-center field wall, swinging the 'Dads to the 2-0 advantage.

RHP Nick Martinez (L, 5-5) kept the Shorebirds bats at bay through his first four innings, but Delmarva (13-18, 41-59) strung together a rally against him in the fifth. After back-to-back singles by C Wynston Sawyer and SS Sammie Starr led off the inning, CF Mikey Planeta singled up the middle, scoring Sawyer. A walk and a pop out had the bases loaded with one away, when DH Michael Ohlman worked a free pass to force in a run. After a strikeout, RF Brenden Webb worked an RBI walk, lifting Delmarva to the 3-2 lead.

The 'Birds stretched the lead with a pair of runs in the top of seventh inning. 2B Jerome Pena led off with a walk and came home on a two-run homer by 1B Nicky Delmonico, boosting the Delmarva advantage to 5-2.

Hickory pulled a run closer with a tally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Akins led off with his second solo home run of the game, cutting the 'Birds lead to 5-3.

Delmarva, though, added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. Pena started the inning with a single and Delmonico followed by getting hit by a pitch, putting two runners on. After a walk loaded the bases, LF Connor Narron skied an RBI sacrifice fly to right field, followed by an RBI fielder's choice by Webb, accounting for the eventual final score of 7-3 in the Shorebirds win.
