Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

Savannah, GA - Behind a strong outing from right-hander Jacob deGrom, the Gnats blasted their way by the Kannapolis Intimidators 8-1 Tuesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats (14-18/55-44) smacked three home runs to score as many as eight runs at home for the first time since the opening game of the second half, on June 21.

Savannah catcher Cam Maron got the scoring started by lofting a two-run homer over the rightfield wall in the bottom of the third inning to put Savannah ahead 2-0. It was the fourth homer of the year for Maron, who finished 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.

The Intimidators (13-18/46-55) scored their only run of the game in the fourth against deGrom. Bill Rice singled, advanced to second on a balk, stole third and came home on C Martin Medina's single smashed past 3B Dustin Lawley. deGrom kept the Gnats in front by stranding Medina at second to end the inning.

For the 7th time in his 13 Gnats' starts, deGrom finished six innings. Tuesday, he set a career-high with nine strikeouts, while walking just one. If he had enough innings to qualify, his 2.47 ERA would lead the South Atlantic League.

The Gnats put the game away late, thanks in large part to two home runs from Dustin Lawley, his 12th and 13th of the year. In the sixth, he launched a solo shot to put Savannah in front 3-1. In the seventh, Lawley crushed a three-run homer to left to finish the game's scoring.

The Gnats will send RHP Michael Fulmer (5-5, 2.67) to the mound against LHP Matt Lane (3-3, 5.73) Wednesday at 7:05 pm. Gates to Historic Grayson Stadium open at 6 pm. The radio broadcast presented by Subway, begins on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com at 6:45 pm.
