(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Rome Braves clinched the second half South Atlantic League Southern Division title by sweeping a doubleheader from the Lexington Legends on Friday evening. Rome won game one 4-2 and took the second game, 3-2.
In the first game, Rome took the lead in the top of the first inning. Tony Mueller led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by Ross Heffley, and scored on a single by William Beckwith.
Lexington evened the score in the bottom of the first. Nolan Fontana led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second by Chan Jong Moon, and scored on a single by Matt Duffy.
The Braves broke the tie in the fourth. After Heffley singled, Beckwith hit a two-run home run to left-center field, giving Rome a 3-1 advantage.
The Legends cut the lead to one with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Zach Johnson led off with a walk, moved to second on a single by Duffy, to third on single by Jobduan Morales and scored on a ground out by Justin Gominsky.
Rome scored the final run of game one in the seventh. Cory Brownsten led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second, then scored on a single by Mueller, giving the Braves their final margin of 4-2.
David Peterson (4-1) entered into the game in the fifth and pitched three scoreless innings to get the win for Rome.
Lexington starter David Rollins (1-3) was handed the loss after allowing three runs over five innings.
In game two, the Legends scored two runs in the top of the first inning. They played as the visiting team because game two was the makeup of a game rained out in Rome August 19. Fontana led off with a walk, and then stole second base. One out later, Johnson singled to move Fontana to third. Duffy was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chris Epps followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Fontana. Rome shortstop Fernando de los Santos, who took the throw from the outfield after Epps' fly ball, then threw the ball past first base trying to get Duffy. The error allowed Johnson to score from second base.
The Braves got on the board with a run in the third. Chase Anselment walked, moved to second on a single by Ryan Query, and scored on two ground outs.
Rome tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth. With one out, Beckwith singled, stole second, and came home on a single by Will Skinner.
The Braves went ahead for good with a run in the fifth. With two out, Heffley singled softly to right field. Beckwith then laced a double down the left field line, plating Heffley with the decisive run.
Rome starter Navery Moore (8-3) got the win, allowing two runs, only one earned, over five innings of work.
Lexington's Tommy Shirley (2-4) entered the game in the fourth, and was handed the loss after allowing two runs in one and two-thirds innings.
Lexington and Rome will resume their series Saturday night. First pitch at Whitaker Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
