POWER REPLAY: On Thursday, West Virginia lost 7-2 to Charleston in the completion of Wednesday's doubleheader and took a 7-1 victory in the series finale. The Power were held without a hit until the top of the seventh inning before a base hit by Jose Osuna and two-run single by Taylor Lewis. In the regularly scheduled game, switched to a seven inning game, Mike Jefferson held the RiverDogs' bats at bay, pitched six innings of two-hit, one run ball. Gregory Polanco homered and drove in three, Alen Hanson was 2-2 with three runs scored, and Lewis added a pair of runs batted in with a double and a triple.
SO CLOSE... BUT: With a loss in game two on Wednesday, the Power were eliminated from playoff contention. Hagerstown and Hickory are the only two clubs that can claim the second half division title.
HONORED: Gregory Polanco and Alen Hanson were honored by the South Atlantic League on the 2012 Annual All-Star Team. Polanco was named as the league's Most Outstanding Major League Prospect and All-Star Outfielder while Hanson was honored as the league All-Star at shortstop. They are the tenth and 11th Power players to be selected as Annual All-Stars and the first since 2009. Polanco joins Rudy Owens (2009 Pitcher of the Year) as the only two West Virginia players to be selected for any of the SAL's top three awards.
NOTHING BUT QUALITY: Mike Jefferson's final start of the 2012 season was his third straight of a quality variety and locked in his third consecutive win. Jefferson also helped author three of the best games this season by the Power pitching staff. The southpaw started West Virginia's only one-hitter this season and also started both of the Power pitching staff's combined two hitters. Barring any other action, Jefferson will finish his first full season with a 7-7 record and a 4.67 ERA. The Batavia, Ohio native went 6-3 as a starting pitcher with a 4.45 ERA over 13 games.
ONE SERIES TO GO: Delmarva leads the all-time series 52-50, but the Power still have the edge at Appalachian Power Park, having won 31 of 57 meetings at home since 2005. The Shorebirds have won eight of 12 so far in 2012, though the Power could split the set with a sweep this weekend. West Virginia took five straight at Delmarva to end the 2011 season to finish the year with a 69-69 record.
26 DOWN AND 1 TO GO: Nick Kingham is tied for the SAL lead with 26 starts this season and is lined up to start one more game in 2012. The right-hander has compiled 108 strikeouts over 120.0 innings pitched, both tops on the club. Since 2009, only Hunter Strickland (126.1 in 2009), Jason Erickson (128.2 in 2010), and Zack Von Rosenberg (125.1 last year) have thrown more innings.
END OF THE ROAD: West Virginia concluded its 2012 road schedule on Thursday with a win. The Power went 7-29 on the road in the first half of the season, but have gone 19-16 away from home in the second half. The 26 total road victories is a new club record low for a full season, one less that the 27 by the inaugural 2005 team. The 2012 edition also lost more road games in a single season than any other team in Power history, though the team did play 71 road games this season rather than 70 due to an April rainout that was made up at Asheville.
POWER POINTS: Chase d'Arnaud (2009) was recalled to the Pirates 25-man roster on Tuesday... The Power are 6-6 on doubleheader days this season. West Virginia has swept one so far this season, split four, and have gotten swept once (Wednesday/ Thursday at Charleston).
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh was idle on Thursday and travels to Milwaukee tostart a three game road trip tonight... Indianapolis lost 5-4 in walk-odd fashion at Toledo... Altoona beat Akron 6-4. The Curve are 68-70 with four games remaining this season... Bradenton was tripped up 6-1 at St. Lucie... State College split a doubleheader at Jamestown, winning 4-2 and losing 2-1.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
