Late Home Run Lifts West Virginia over Delmarva, 3-2

Charleston, WV - West Virginia second baseman Taylor Lewis hit a two out home run to right field in the eighth inning to lift the Power to a 3-2 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park.

The Power struck first in the second inning. Dan Gamache hit a lead off double and scored on a two out single by Francisco Diaz.

In the fourth, the Power built a 2-0 lead. Gregory Polanco singled and Jose Osuna hit a double to right-center field to score Polanco from first.

The Shorebirds battled back in the seventh inning. Adrian Marin reached on an infield single and later scored on a single into center field by Wynston Sawyer. With two outs, Jason Esposito hit a single through the right side of the infield to score Michael Ohlman, who had two hits on the night.

In the eighth inning, Taylor Lewis hit a solo homer to right field to break a 2-2 tie and vault the Power into the lead.

Relievers Robbie Kilcrease and Nathan Kilcrease combined to shutdown the Shorebirds over the final two innings to give West Virginia the win in game one.

Shorebirds starter Miguel Chalas went five innings and allowed five hits and two runs. He struck out three and walked one batter.

Alex Schmarzo went three innings and allowed just three hits and one run, the home run by Lewis. Schmarzo struck out five and did not issue a walk.

The Shorebirds and Power play game two of the series on Saturday, September 1 at 7:05pm. RHP Williams Louico is the scheduled pitcher.
