Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC -- The Rome Braves exploded for four runs in the sixth and eighth innings and defeated the Charleston RiverDogs, 9-2, in South Atlantic League action Sunday evening at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
A season-high crowd of 7,329 witnessed the RiverDogs settle for a split in the four-game series, and watched the Braves hand the hosts a 5-2 record over the seven-game home stand. Charleston slips to 6-4 in the second half (49-30) while Rome improves to 3-7 (42-36).
Rome second baseman Dean White paced the Braves' 11-hit attack with three hits and was one of four who drove home two runs apiece. Joining White with a pair of RBI were right fielder Brandon Jones, third baseman Van Pope and center fielder Ardley Jansen.
Pope's groundout RBI in the top of the first gave Rome a 1-0 lead against starter Chase Wright. Charleston is now 15-20 on the season when their opponents score first.
The RiverDogs knotted the score at 1 each in the bottom of the second when Edwar Gonzaelz slugged a home run to left field for the second consecutive game, his fourth of the season.
But it was Rome's sixth inning when four Braves scored, led by Jones' two-run home run to right center and Jansen's two-run single to center.
Charleston added one run in the bottom of the sixth when Tim Battle reached on a throwing error and advanced to second, stole third base and then scored on a throwing error by catcher Clint Sammons.
Rome again exploded for four more runs in the eighth, highlighted by White's two-run double to right. Matt Young singled home another run and the scoring concluded when Pope drew a bases-loaded walk.
Luis Atilano picked up the win for Rome and improved his record to 6-4 as he pitched six innings, allowed two runs on three hits, walked one and fanned two. Relievers Angelo Burrows and Will Startup pitched one and two innings, respectively, and each permitted one hit.
Wright garnered a no-decision, allowing only one run in five innings. Marvin Moscat, who had just joined Charleston from Tampa and who made his debut, was rocked for four runs on four hits, and issued two walks in his 2 complete innings of work and suffered the loss.
The RiverDogs take to the road for an eight-game trip, starting a four-game set Monday night in Greensboro with right-handed Mike Knox (0-0) getting the call.
