Catfish Come Up Short in Series Finale with Greensboro 5-2

COLUMBUS, GA‹Despite scoring first tonight for the first time in the four-game series, the Columbus Catfish fell in defeat against the Greensboro Grasshoppers 5-2 at Golden Park. The two teams split the four-game series while Greensboro beat the Catfish five games to three in the season series. Greensboro 3B Jonathan Fulton had a pair of RBI singles for the Grasshoppers in the victory, while Catfish RF Ryan Russ went 3-5 with a double and a triple in the Catfish defeat. The Catfish return to .500 in the second half at 5-5 while Greensboro improves to 5-5 with the win. Columbus will not return home until Sunday, July 17th as they travel to the Carolinas for a twelve-game road trip starting tomorrow.

3B Blake DeWitt drove home the first run of the game tonight for the Catfish with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning against Grasshopper starter RHP David Humen. Greensboro promptly scored two runs on three hits against Catfish starter RHP Brandon Weeden in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Catfish tied the game when Russ doubled home CF Jamie Hoffmann in the fourth inning. Hoffmann¹s single with two outs in the inning extended his hitting streak to ten games.

A Catfish error in the fifth inning helped to lead to an unearned run against Weeden and a 3-2 Greensboro lead, as the Grasshoppers tacked on runs in the sixth and eighth to defeat the Fish 5-2. Greensboro RHP Chris Mobley pitched a scoreless ninth for his 21st save. The Catfish start the 12-game road trip, the longest of the season, tomorrow night at 7:00 PM at Hickory. The Fish take on the Crawdads for four games, the Asheville Tourists for four, and the Greenville Bombers for four games on the trip, Follow the Catfish action on www.columbuscatfish.com and WDAK 540 AM on the road.
