Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Rome Braves scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to escape with a 2-0 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats in front of a raucous Thirsty Thursday crowd of 2,651 at Historic Grayson Stadium Thursday night. The Gnats (10-16) play game two of their eight-game home stand Friday night.
Savannah starter Greg Peavey pitched brilliantly over six shutout innings. He struck out six and gave up just three hits while allowing just one runner to reach third base.
The Braves (7-20) scored their first run in the top of the eighth on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by LF Robert Hefflinger. Rome loaded the bases against reliever Gabriel Zavala on a bloop base hit, a bunt and error on 3B Aderlin Rodriguez and a four-pitch walk from Zavala. Josh Edginrelieved Zavala with the bases loaded and no outs, but the first batter he faced, Hefflinger hit the sacrifice fly to put Rome ahead 1-0. Edgin escaped further damage by inducing two groundouts to shortstop to end the inning.
Rome added an insurance run in the ninth on a throwing error on Shields.
The Gnats' best scoring chance came in the second inning. Savannah loaded the bases with one out, but the bottom two hitters in the order, C Albert Cordero and LF Alonzo Harris popped out and grounded out to end the threat.
The Gnats will hand the ball to RHP Taylor Whitenton (1-0, 1.10) against Rome RHP Caleb Brewer (0-1, 3.03) in game two of the Gnats' eight-game home stand Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and gates open at 6 pm. The pre-game show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 6:50 pm.
