Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 5, 2011) - Kyle Eveland's two-run single in the bottom of the eighth powered the Kannapolis Intimidators over the Greenvile Drive, 3-2, on Thursday at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The Intimidators snapped a four-game losing streak behind 15 strikeouts from the pitching staff, a season-high for a nine-inning game.
The Intimidators rallied off Drive reliever Keith Couch in the bottom of the eighth inning to take their first lead of the night. With one out, Dan Black followed a Mike Blanke single with a line drive to right field that Bryce Brentz bobbled in the outfield, allowing Blanke to score. Juan Silverio followed with a single, and Drew Lee walked to load the bases, setting up Eveland's game-winning hit.
The Drive took advantage of walks to the first two batters of the game, and Bryce Brentz and Christian Vazquez followed with RBI-singles to give Greenville a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Kannapolis starter Matt Heidenreich, making his fifth start of the season, settled down after the first inning, throwing 1-2-3 innings in three of the next four frames.
Heidenreich tossed his second quality start of the season, lasting 6 1/3 innings and striking out a season-high nine batters while walking two and allowing two runs off seven hits. Jake Wilson entered the game with the bases loaded in the seventh and struck out the next two batters to get out of the jam. Wilson (2-0), who earned the win, pitched a scoreless eighth before turning things over to Phil Negus, who struck out the side in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Kannapolis faces the Greenville in the second game of this four-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The game will be followed by a post-game fireworks show, and tickets are available by calling the box office at (704) 932-3267 or visiting www.IntimidatorsBaseball.com .
