Dayton Dragons News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich.-Dayton starting pitcher Sal Romano fired six shutout innings as the Dragons defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons win gave the Dragons a split of the four-game series.
Romano threw only 60 pitches over six strong innings. He allowed three hits and walked no one while striking out six to earn the victory in his first Midwest League start. He faced only one batter over the minimum and did not allow a runner past first base.
Brent Peterson collected three hits as part of an 11-hit attack for the Dragons. Peterson produced two singles and a double over his first three plate appearances to give him six consecutive hits to start the season before he flied out to right in his final at-bat.
The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Peterson doubled to right field with two outs and scored on Zach Vincej's hard single to center. Dayton added two more in the sixth on a two-out, two-run single to right by Seth Mejias-Brean that brought in Peterson and Vincej to make it 3-0. Dayton scored again in the seventh when Jeff Gelalich doubled to left, went to third on Junior Arias' deep fly out to center, and scored on Joe Hudson's sacrifice fly to left to make it 4-0.
Tony Amezcua followed Romano to the mound and fired two perfect innings, striking out three of the six batters he faced. Mo Wiley pitched the ninth inning, allowing an unearned run before striking out Mike Hernandez with the tying run at the plate to end the game.
The Dragons reached double figures in hits for the second straight game, finishing with 11. Along with the three by Peterson, Vincej and Gelalich each added two. West Michigan finished with only four hits.
Dragons pitchers struck out 11 batters for the fourth consecutive game. Dragons starting pitchers combined to allow only one run over 12 innings in the Dayton wins Saturday and Sunday.
The Dragons (2-2) begin a three-game series at South Bend on Monday against the Silver Hawks at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Wandy Peralta will start for Dayton in his Midwest League debut. South Bend will counter with left-hander Cody Wheeler . The Dragons home opener is Thursday, April 11 at Fifth Third Field against the Great Lakes Loons.
