Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Midland, MI - In the finale of a season-opening four-game series with the Great Lakes Loons, the Fort Wayne TinCaps fell by a final score of 8-3 on Sunday evening. Starter Zach Eflin, making his Midwest League debut, allowed four runs in three innings, which proved to be a deficit too large for Fort Wayne to overcome.
The TinCaps secured an early 1-0 advantage in the second inning on an RBI triple from shortstop Stephen Carmon, scoring Alberth Martinez, who had reached on an error. In the bottom of the inning, Great Lakes (1-3) tagged Eflin (0-1), who turns 19 on Monday, for three runs, two of which were unearned. One had scored on one-out double by Eric Smith, and with two down Alexis Aguilar lofted a fly ball to left, which was dropped by Alberth Martinez and scored an error. That led to two more runs scoring in the inning.
Paul Hoenecke hit a solo home run in the fourth, while James Baldwin and Corey Seager each added home runs, too. The two other Fort Wayne (3-1) runs scored with RBI from Brian Adams and Dane Phillips. The TinCaps went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Loons starter Carlos Frias (1-0) surrendered only three hits during his start.
The TinCaps stay on the road and will begin a three-game series against the West Michigan Whitecaps Monday afternoon at 12 p.m. The scheduled starters are Erik Cabrera for Fort Wayne and Edgar De La Rosa for West Michigan. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
