Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs hit their first four home runs of the season, two by supplemental first-round pick Patrick Wisdom, to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 7-2 on Sunday afternoon. The win earns a split of the first four-game series of the season and the 2-2 Chiefs will host the Beloit Snappers for three games starting at 6:30 p.m. Monday night
The Chiefs got things going right away against Rattlers starter Jorge Lopez. Ildemaro Vargas walked on four pitches and moved to second on a single by Breyvic Valera. Wisdom put the Chiefs on the board with their first home run of the season as he launched a 1-0 pitch over the left-field berm for a 3-0 lead. Jacob Wilson followed with a home run of his own as the Chiefs went back-to-back for a 4-0 lead.
Peoria added to the lead in the second and third innings. Gerwuins Velazco doubled to right with one out and scored on a single by Valera for a 5-0 advantage. In the third Alex Mejia launched a towering flyball out onto Jefferson Street that just stayed inside the foul pole for a solo home run, his first of the season.
Chiefs starter Kyle Helisek cruised through the first five innings and the Chiefs added on in the bottom of the fifth. Wisdom greeted Wisconsin reliever Ryan Gibbard with his second homer of the game, this one just clearing the yellow line in left for a 7-0 Peoria lead.
The Rattlers scratched across a run in the sixth on a wild pitch and in the eighth on a sac fly to finish the scoring. Helisek (1-0) picked up the win with one run allowed over 5 1/3 innings. He gave up six hits and walked two while striking out four. Joe Scanio threw 1 2/3 shutout innings with three strikeouts and one hit allowed. Mike Aldrete gave up a run on one hit and a strikeout in his one inning of work. Corey Baker threw a shutout inning with a strikeout.
