Lansing Lugnuts News Release

EASTLAKE, OH - 18-year-old Roberto Osuna enjoyed an impressive Midwest League debut, backed by home runs from Balbino Fuenmayor and Carlos Ramirez, and the Lansing Lugnuts (3-1) powered past the Lake County Captains (1-3), 7-1, on Sunday afternoon at Classic Park.

After losing a 4-1 lead in a 5-4 Opening Night defeat, the Lugnuts won the next three games in the series to take the first leg of a season-opening seven-game road trip.

Osuna (Win, 1-0), ranked the Blue Jays' #2 prospect by Baseball America, struck out eight Captains in five dominant innings, allowing just two hits and walking none.

The first hit provided the Captains' sole run, a fluke Leonardo Castillo inside-the-park homer that initially lodged in the fence, causing center fielder Ronnie Melendez to put his hands in the air while Castillo circled the bases. Upon an umpires' conference, however, the ball was ruled in play.

Including Osuna's outing, Lansing starters have now pitched 22 innings while allowing eight hits and two runs (one earned) and striking out 27.

Lake County starter Jake Sisco (Loss, 0-1) pitched well in 5 2/3 innings, but was victimized by leadoff home runs by Fuenmayor and Ramirez in the second and third innings respectively.

Lansing ripped the game open with a four-run seventh inning against reliever Nick Pasquale, thanks to a Jorge Flores RBI single followed two batters later by a three-base error by left fielder Jorge Martinez on a Gustavo Pierre RBI single.

Fuenmayor closed out the scoring with an opposite-field RBI double in the ninth against Captains closer Felix Sterling, giving him a team-high five RBIs.

Lansing relievers Ben White (3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 K) and Matthew Johnson (1.0 IP 1 H, 1 BB) blanked the Captains over the final four innings to close out the game.

The Lugnuts continue their road trip with a three-game series at Bowling Green, opening up at 8:05 p.m. Monday night with left-hander Daniel Norris opposite Hot Rods right-hander Taylor Guerrieri.

Lansing returns home to face the Michigan State Spartans in the Crosstown Showdown presented by Auto-Owners Insurance at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, April 11th.
