Brockton Rox News Release

LYNN, MA - LHP Rolando Viera struck out North Shore 3B Vic Davilla with the tying run at first and two outs in the ninth inning to cap a complete-game shutout win as the Rox nipped the Spirit 1-0 at Frasier Field. Viera struck out 12 batters in the win; he has given up just one run in his last two starts (16 innings) while striking out 22 batters. C Mike Torres drove in the only run of the game for Brockton with an infield single in the fourth. Brockton improves to 11-15 with the win and comes back to Campanelli Stadium to begin a seven-game homestand starting tomorrow at 7:05 PM against the New Jersey Jackals

2B Mike Scanzano led off the fourth frame with a double to left field against LHP Joey Siak. After 3B Zach Strong drove a flyout to center that moved Scanzano to third, 1B Jason Radwan grounded out, holding Scanzano at third. After a hit-batsman, Torres hit a slow roller that Siak dove to field, but Torres reached safely with no one to cover first, giving the Rox a 1-0 lead. Radwan did not have a hit in the game, ending a 10-game hitting streak.

Viera cruised through the final innings. After allowing a single in the fifth, he did not allow another baserunner until a DH B.J. Weed single in the ninth inning with two outs, a span of 13 batters. With a runner at first and two outs, a Viera 3-2 breaking ball froze Davilla, the potential winning run at the plate, giving Viera and the Rox the victory.

Tomorrow the Rox and New Jersey Jackals square off for the first time in 2006 at 7:05 PM at Campanelli Stadium. RHP Robert Averette (1-3, 3.58 ERA) takes the hill for the Rox.
