New Jersey Jackals News Release

The New Jersey Jackals avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the New Haven County Cutters, winning 8-7 on a one-out rocket to center field with the bases loaded by pinch-hitter John Lindsey.

Zach Smithlin, who was 3-for-4, led off with an infield single to start the Jackals ninth. Jason Belcher then laid down a perfect bunt single as Smithlin advanced to third because no one on the Cutters defense was covering the base.

The Cutters then intentionally walked Wilton Veras to get to Bill Peavey, loading the bases. Peavey then reached on a fielder's choice, but the Jackals remained at 7-7 because the force-out to home. Lindsey then stepped, singled and ended the lengthy contest.

Josh Swartz (2-1), who picked up the win, pitched another gaudy effort in four innings of relief. The Cutters Corey Willey was dealt the loss in relief. Jarrett Starwarz, the Cutters starting pitcher, allowed seven runs on nine hits in 6 innings pitched.

Unlike the night before, where the Cutters took an early lead, the Jackals struck first and often. In the first inning Peavey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Smithlin who had walked. Ricardo Cordova, a red-hot hitter in the past 10 days, scorched a 2-run double underneath the glove of a diving left fielder.

At the end of the second inning the Jackals had a 7-0 lead; however the Cutters used its own two-inning outburst to tie the game in the fifth, fueled by Matt Gaskin's towering, dead pull three-run homer to left field.

Isaac Pavlik pitched solid early, but in his 4 2/3 innings pitched he allowed five walks and seven runs on seven hits; he avoided the loss.
