Spirit shut out in series finale
June 22, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release
The Spirit saw their three-game winning streak snapped on Thursday night, as Rox starting pitcher Rolando Viera dominated the game from start to finish for a 1-0 victory in the series finale.
Viera baffled the Spirit hitters in a complete-game shutout performance. The Spirit got to the Rox starter for just four hits and they never had a runner past second base. The Spirit ran themselves out of some key situations early in the contest, with runners twice getting picked off by the crafty lefty on the mound for the Rox.
As the game progressed, Viera completely shut down the Spirit attack. He retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced in a 12 strikeout performance.
Spirit starter Joey Siak kept the Spirit in the game with a nearly flawless eight-inning outing. Siak allowed just one run on four hits while striking out three. Despite his solid outing, however, his offense failed to give him any run support and he suffered his second loss of the season.
The Rox didn't give Viera much more support, but they did come through with a run in the fourth inning and as it turned out that was all the offense he would need. Rox second baseman Mike Scanzano led off the inning with a double, and after Siak retired the next two Rox hitters, Mike Torres put Brockton on top with a game-winning RBI single.
North Shore hits the road for back-to-back series with the New Haven County Cutters and New Jersey Jackals. The Spirit and the Cutters will play two on both Friday and Saturday. Chris Farley gets the start in Game one on Friday, and Jared Trout takes the mound in the nightcap.
