Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC-- They say speed kills and Asheville's centerfielder Wes Rogers was pure evidence of that Friday night. Rogers had five of the Tourists eight stolen bases and etched his name into the SAL record books with the most stolen bases by an individual player in a single game. The accomplishment has been done on eight previous occasions dating back to 1961.

As for the game, Asheville jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a big third inning. Forrest Wall and Omar Carrizales hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the frame. Dom Nunez later added a sacrifice fly and Rome's starting pitcher, Brandon Barker, also balked in a run.

The Tourists tacked on a run in each of the next two innings. Carrizales connected with another RBI double in the fourth and the Braves balked in a run once again in the fifth. Rome was able to plate one in the sixth on Tanner Kreitemeier's sacrifice fly but Asheville answered with a run of their own in the seventh.

The Braves did manage two runs in the bottom of the eighth when Wigberto Nevarez lined a two-run single into left, but that was as close as Rome would come.

Helmis Rodriguez started for the Asheville and worked six strong innings. The left-hander limited the Braves to just four hits and one unearned run. Josh MIchalec pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save in as many nights. Asheville's pitching staff has allowed a total of four earned runs through the first two games.

Carrizales finished 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. Wall ended up 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Rogers reached base five times by way of a triple, single, and three walks. He stole second base three times and third base twice.

The same two teams are back in action on Saturday night for with the first pitch slated for 6:00pm.
