Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Kannapolis Intimidators battled into the 12th inning, where Chris Curley's 2-out double drove in Eddy Alvarez for the go-ahead run in an eventual 4-3 win (F/12) over the Lakewood BlueClaws on Friday night at FirstEnergy Park. Curley finished the game 3-for-6 while catcher Brett Austin collected his first two career triples, going 3-for-5 on the night.
With the game tied 3-3 since the seventh inning, Alvarez led off the top of the 12th by reaching base on an error from Lakewood shortstop Malquin Canelo. Two outs later, Curley stepped to the plate and crushed a Joey DeNato pitch over the head of center fielder Carlos Tocci to plate Alvarez. DeNato (0-1) took the loss.
Devon Davis (1-0) picked up the win for Kannapolis by tossing a perfect 11th and a scoreless 12th, limiting Lakewood to one walk while striking out three batter. Davis, the fifth Intimidators pitcher of the game, combined with relievers David Trexler, Jacob Morris, and Kelvis Valerio to work 8.0 relief innings with 10 strikeouts between the bullpen.
Kannapolis (1-1) struck first in the top of the second when Austin led off with a triple - the first of his career - to the gap in right-center field. Louie Lechich followed with an RBI-single for a 1-0 lead over Lakewood.
The BlueClaws responded in the bottom of the fourth inning when Damek Tomscha launched an opposite-field home run (1) off Spencer Adams to tie the game, 1-1.
Adams tossed 4.0 innings, allowing a run and scattering seven hits while striking out two and walking one. David Trexler worked 2.0 scoreless relief innings, striking out two and walking two while holding Lakewood to a pair of hits.
In the sixth, Austin tripled to deep right-center field and later scored on a Mason Robbins RBI-single. Robbins crossed the plate on a BlueClaws error for a 3-1 lead.
Austin's only other 3-hit game in his career also came at Lakewood on July 26, 2014.
Lakewood evened the game with two runs in the home half of the eighth against Kannapolis reliever Jacob Morris, a 2014 Intimidators outfielder making his professional pitching debut. Morris struck out two and plunked two while allowing two runs and two hits in 1.0 inning of work.
The Intimidators continue this 4-game series against the BlueClaws on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. when RHP Yelmison Peralta makes his Class A debut against Lakewood's RHP Tyler Viza. The Intimidators are on a 7-game road trip to open the 2015 season before playing their home opener on Thursday, April 16, at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
