Greensboro Returns Favor to Even Series

Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds could not find their offensive rhythm from the night before, as Friday's game was spoiled by rainy weather and a five-run sixth inning for Greensboro. The Grasshoppers knotted the series at one game apiece with a decisive 10-2 final score.

The night began as a pitcher's duel between Tanner Chleborad for Delmarva and Jose Adames for Greensboro. Chleborad retired the first ten batters he faced, while Adames only allowed one walk through the first three innings.

The teams traded blows in the fourth inning with Greensboro striking first. Chleborad fielded a comebacker but threw wide into the basepath with Justin Twine colliding into Riley Palmer trying to make the catch. The error came back to hurt Chleborad as Twine stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Brian Schales.

Delmarva deadlocked the game at 1-1 with a couple of extra base hits in the bottom half. Steve Wilkerson led off the fourth with a double over Zach Sullivan's head in left field. Later in the frame, Conor Bierfeldt hooked an RBI double into the left field corner to tie the game.

The game hinged on a big sixth inning for Greensboro, as soon as Chleborad departed for Delmarva. Chleborad finished with one unearned run allowed on two hits and a career-high six strikeouts in five innings of work. Against reliever Nick Cunningham, Mason Davis led off with a triple, scoring when Twine singled up the middle. A walk and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, and Delmarva turned a double play on a routine grounder, allowing another run across.

The rally kept going though, with a two-out RBI single by John Norwood. Matt Trowbridge then came out of the bullpen, but he could not strand two inherited runners as Rodrigo Vigil delivered another single.

Playing catch up, the Shorebirds' offense went dormant. The only other run came in the eighth inning when Wilkerson and Bierfeldt linked up again. The second baseman belted a line drive into the right-center gap for a leadoff triple. With another RBI opportunity, Bierfeldt took advantage with another double.

Greensboro capped off the night with a three-run home run by Austen Smith in the ninth inning. Colby Suggs pitched a perfect ninth to close out the 10-2 victory, a similarly lopsided game to Opening Night's 10-0 Delmarva win. James Buckelew (1-0) earned the win in relief for Greensboro, while Cunningham (0-1) took the loss.

The teams square off twice more over the weekend, with a Saturday night matchup at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium scheduled for a 7:05 pm first pitch. A pair of southpaws face off, Brian Gonzalez for Delmarva and Scott Squier for Greensboro.
