Gnats Fall in Extras on Opening Day

(Charleston, WV) - Wuilmer Becerra crushed a 3-run home run in the fifth, but West Virginia connected for 12 hits in a 7-6 win in 10 innings over the Gnats on Opening Night Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park.

RHP Corey Oswalt (0-0, 3.18) started for the Gnats allowed just three runs (two earned) on ten hits over 5.2 IP. Oswalt, who struck-out four and walks none, gets a no decision after hanging tough through a bumpy first start.

First baseman Jerrick Suiter played the hero tonight for the Power. The TCU product was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Suiter reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Jeff Roy for the walk-off victory.

Infielder JC Rodriguez had a triple in the top of the 4th that lead to a Sand Gnats run. Rodriguez was scored by Johnathan Johnson, who had led off the previous inning with a double and plated the Gnats first run of the 2015 campaign. Veterans Jon Leroux and Luis Guillorme had one hit each.

It was RHP Eric Dorsch (1-0, 0.00) who picked up the winning after facing just three batters in the 10th.

Savannah reliever Cameron Griffin threw one and a third scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Griffin struck-out three of the five batters he faced on Thursday.

The Gnats continue their series with the Power from Charleston, WV on Friday with a 7:05 PM game. LHP Brad Wieck takes the mound for the Gnats, while the Power will send RHP Alex McRae to the hill for game two.
