Koji Uehara to Join Drive on Rehab

April 10, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release

Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive's 2015 season is now underway at Fluor Field, and on Saturday, baseball fans will see a familiar face put on the Drive uniform and take the mound.

That familiar face is Red Sox closer Koji Uehara, who is currently on the 15-day disabled list. Before he rejoins Boston's bullpen, he'll make an appearance for the Drive on Saturday as part of an injury rehab assignment from a strained left hamstring.

Uehara played a vital role on the Red Sox World Championship team in 2013. He pitched in 13 games during the 2013 playoff run and collected seven saves in as many opportunities to go along with an 0.66 ERA. He was named MVP of the American League Championship Series that year after throwing six shutout innings with nine strikeouts and picking up three saves.

Since being signed by Boston as a free agent before the 2013 season, the 40-year old has posted a 1.75 ERA with 47 saves in 137 appearances with 181 strikeouts. Uehara came to Major League Baseball in 2009 after a 10-year career pitching in his native Japan, and in six years in the majors with Baltimore, Texas and Boston, he's saved 61 games with a 2.44 career ERA.

Uehara will join the list of players to appear with the Drive after playing in the majors, which includes fellow pitchers Jon Lester (2007), John Smoltz (2009), Andrew Miller (2012), Rich Hill (2012), Chris Carpenter (2012) and Franklin Morales (2013), shortstop Stephen Drew (2014) and outfielder Jason Repko (2012).
