Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- Reynaldo Rodriguez drove-in five runs and Brock Huntzinger struck out nine batters as the Portland Sea Dogs (24-43) rolled to a 13-5 victory over the Trenton Thunder (40-30) Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. The win was the Sea Dogs' second straight as they improve to 10-7 in June.
Trenton starter Dellin Betances got off to a wild start and the Sea Dogs were able to take advantage. Portland scored three times on two hits in the first inning. Two walks and a Trenton error led to the three run inning which was capped-off by a Rodriguez RBI single.
Betances (3-3) would suffer the loss as he was unable to get out of the third inning. In 2.1 innings of work, he allowed seven runs (six earned) on four hits; he walked four, hit a batter and uncorked three wild pitches. His ERA rose from 1.76 to 2.61.
Four straight hits in the third led to four Portland runs including RBI singles by Rodriguez, Oscar Tejeda, and Jorge Padron. Jon Hee would add a RBI double.
Tim Federowicz added a two run double off Naoya Okamoto in the fourth as Portland took a commanding 9-2 lead.
Meanwhile, Portland starter Brock Huntzinger (4-5) was able to hold the Yankees affiliate to two runs on two hits in five innings of work to earn the win. A Jose Gil home run and a Rob Lyerly RBI double to center field in the third was the only damage Huntzinger allowed. He struck out a career high nine batters, the most by a Sea Dogs pitcher since Robert Coello struck out 11 on June 2, 2010 in Trenton.
Rodriguez and the Portland offense would strike again in the sixth inning when Rodriguez and Tejeda smashed back-to-back home runs off Felix Hernandez and took a 13-2 lead. Rodriguez stroked a three run homer for his third hit of the game and fifth RBI. It was his second home run since joining the Sea Dogs on June 11th, he has now hit safely in five straight games. Tejeda followed with his second four bagger of the season.
All nine Portland starters would reach base safely. Only Ryan Khoury, who was re-signed by the Red Sox and assigned to Portland Tuesday, was without a hit. The game lasted 3:36 and was played in front of 4,901 fans at Hadlock Field.
The two clubs will continue the series Wednesday night at 7:00 PM at Hadlock Field. Right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson (5-4, 3.16) will take the mound for Portland. He will be opposed by Trenton righty Craig Heyer (6-3, 2.84). The World Famous ZOOperstars will invade Hadlock Field Wednesday for their first appearance of the season.
