Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Broomfield, Colo. - The Arizona Sundogs defeated the Rocky Mountain Rage hockey team 5-4 in overtime tonight at the Broomfield Event Center, but not without a fight. As a team riddled with injuries, the Rage rallied back from a 4-1 deficit late in the second period to tie the game and force overtime. The Rage outshot the Sundogs 49-33.
The Rage improved to 8-17-4 (20 points) for fourth place in the northwest division, while the Sundogs improved to 15-13-1 (31 points) in the southwest division.
The Rage came out to a quick start by peppering Arizona goalie Chris King with nine shots on goal before the Sundogs even got a shot off. Despite Rocky Mountain's efforts, the Sundogs would be the first to put the puck in the back of the net. Centers Ryan Steeves and Jordan Mowbray posted goals at 9:42 and 13:14, respectively, for the Sundogs.
At 16:20, forward Chip Dunleavy started the scoring for the Rage, cutting Arizona's lead by one. He took a shot by Adam Stefishen just outside the crease and tipped it over the left shoulder of Arizona goalie Chris King.
The Sundogs started the second period on the power play as Stefishen was called for holding to close out the first. Less than a minute into the period, Mark Wires was called for slashing giving Arizona a two-man advantage. Arizona right winger and league-leading scorer Brent Kelly capitalized on the opportunity at 1:06. Just under six minutes later, Kelly notched his second goal of the night to give Arizona a 4-1 lead.
After a high-sticking call on Arizona's Adam Campbell at 11:56 of the second, it was Rocky Mountain's turn to capitalize on the power-play. Dunleavy fired a shot past King from the blue line earning Dunleavy his second goal of the night and third goal in the last two days.
In the third period, teamwork from right winger John DiPace and center Dominic Noel brought the Rage within two points. Noel earned a short-handed breakaway opportunity skating down the wing. He sent the puck around an Arizona defender tripped up on the ice and passed it to DiPace who shot the puck past King cutting the lead to one at 11:41. Rage left winger Adam Loncan would earn the game-tying goal at 17:27 of the third period forcing overtime. Nathan Rosychuk and Kyle Kos were credited with assists. The Rage outshot the Sundogs 14-4 in the third period.
The Sundogs took the momentum in overtime earning continuous scoring chances. Rage goaltender David Guerrera bent over backwards stopping what came at him. But it took Arizona's Dan DaSilva to find a way to beat Guerrera winning the game for the Sundogs.
Local Ties: Arizona Sundogs defenseman Max Bull, in the lineup tonight, played four seasons for the University of Denver Pioneers and helped the Pioneers to the 2004 National Championship. Bull posted a goal against the Colorado Eagles last night in his fourth game of the season.
The Rage returns to action tomorrow (Jan. 6) when they travel north to the Budweiser Events Center to play the Colorado Eagles in their tenth meeting of the season. Fans can listen online at www.RockyMountainRage.com or over the radio live on AM Z560 with the pre-game show starting at 6:50 p.m.
