Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Wilmington, DE - The Wilmington Blue Rocks saw their season-high five-game winning streak come to a close in resounding fashion, as they were swept away in a doubleheader by the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Monday night at Frawley Stadium. The Blue Crew fell in the opener, 4-2, and dropped the nightcap, 3-1.

Game one was a back and forth affair early on. The teams saw the lead change hands three times over the first four frames.

Myrtle Beach grabbed the advantage first with a tally in the top of the first. Mycal Jones opened the contest by working a walk off Wilmington starter Ivor Hodgson. After a sacrifice bunt by Cole Miles moved Jones into scoring position, Nelson brought him home with an RBI single.

Christian Colon wasted little time in authoring an answer. The shortstop launched a 1-1 pitch over the left-field fence and into the Myrtle Beach bullpen for a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the first.

Wilmington would go in front one frame later thanks to the hustle of Adam Frost. The third baseman walked, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and then stole third. He scored on the most exciting play of the game. When Fernando Garcia struck out on a pitch in the dirt, he took off for first base. As a result Myrtle Beach catcher Osman Marval had to throw the ball down. When he released his toss Frost broke for the plate and slid in just in front of the return throw home.

The Rocks lead was shortlived, as Myrtle Beach tied the game thanks to a Frost miscue in the very next frame. With a runner on third and two outs, Mike Jones bounced one towards Frost at third base, Frost circled right and fielded the ball cleanly, but his throw to first pulled Ryan Stovall off the bag, which allowed Miles to score.

The Pelicans then took the lead for good in the fourth. An inning-opening walk for Travis Jones eventually resulted in a run on L.V. Ware's single up the middle. The Pelicans added an insurance tally in the fifth courtesy of Travis Jones' sacrifice fly to left in the fifth.

Hodgson (5-7) took the loss. The left-hander allowed three of the scores (two earned) on four hits and four walks in four frames of work. Myrtle Beach starter Randall Delgado earned the win. Delgado (4-6) yielded just two runs on three hits in five innings pitched.

The Rocks fell behind quickly in game two. Dan Nelson launched a two-run homer off Wilmington starter Bryan Paukovits that sailed over the right-field fence just inside the foul pole in the second inning.

Wilmington would cut the lead in half during the fourth frame. Rey Navarrro and Wil Myers each singled with one down in the inning. After Nick Francis went down on strikes, Salvador Perez came through with a two-out RBI single into right-center field.

But the Blew Crew let a golden opportunity to pull even slip away in the sixth inning. Navarro led off with a bloop-double into shallow right field and Myers followed with a walk. Francis then failed to get down a sacrifice bunt, popping his attempt up to the catcher for the frame's first out. Myrtle Beach starter J.J. Hoover did the rest, inducing a softly hit 6-3 double play off the bat of Perez to end the threat.

Hoover was magnificent for Myrtle Beach. The right-hander fanned nine Blue Rock batters while walking only one to pick up the win. Paukovits (1-2) was saddled with the loss despite allowing just the two runs in 4.2 innings pitched.

The Rocks get Tuesday off to regroup before opening a four-game series with the first-half CL North champion Frederick Keys on Wednesday at Frawley Stadium. The piggyback combo of Buddy Baumann (2-1, 2.35) and Jairo Cuevas (3-3, 6.32) take the hill in the series opener for Wilmington. Frederick will counter with Ryan O'Shea (5-4, 3.50). PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

Christian Colon's home run in the opener was the first long ball of his professional career. The fourth overall pick in this June's draft left the yard in his 46th at-bat as a Blue Rock. Colon hit 17 home runs this season as an All-American shortstop at Cal State Fullerton.

Wilmington's bid to move its record in series above .500 on the season failed on Monday. Wilmington dropped two-of-three to the Pelicans over the last two days, putting them on the wrong side of a set for the first time in their last six attempts.

With the loss in the nightcap, the Rocks' record in rubber matches fell to 5-2.

Wilmington was swept for the first time in a doubleheader in 2010. The Rocks had split each of their first two twin billings.
