Potomac Nationals News Release
SALEM, VA - After dropping the first of two to Salem 4-1, the Potomac Nationals took game two of a double-dip 8-5.
Fresh off a rain out at Fenway Park Saturday, the P-Nats were greeted by heavy rains most of the day in Southern Virginia. Thankfully for Potomac, the skies cleared at around 4 p.m. for good.
Game One got off to a good start for the Nationals. Brian Peacock hit a majestic homer just to the left of the 401 sign in dead center off Salem starter Brock Huntzinger to start the scoring in the second.
But Salem came back in the home half of the 4th against Potomac starter Evan Bronson. Peter Hissey, Oscar Tejeda and Will Middlebrooks led off the inning with consecutive singles to put across the Red Sox first two runs of the game to give Salem a 2-1 lead. After a Tim Federowicz double play, Bronson gave up back-to-back walks and back-to-back RBI singles from Ryan Dent and Jon Hee put Salem up 4-1.
Huntzinger was solid throughout as he only gave up three base runners the final three innings. He went the distance earning his seventh victory of the year giving up just four hits. Bronson took his seventh loss of the year and for the first time in his pro career of 37 appearances he walked more than two batters.
Game Two was not the same song and dance for Potomac. Off Salem starter Miguel Gonzalez, Josh Johnson led off the game reaching on a strikeout. Back to back singles from Steve Lombardozzi and Derek Norris scored Johnson and Potomac took a 1-0 lead.
Salem came right back with two in the bottom half off Trevor Holder. One scored on a error by Josh Johnson and the other on an RBI single from Will Middlebrooks.
But it was the P-Nats game as they put two on the board in the second to retake the lead. RBI Doubles from Will Ortiz and Steve Lombardozzi put across runs for Potomac. After a 1-2-3 inning from Holder, the third was kind to Potomac as well. With two outs and no one on, the Nationals broke it open in the third. Will Ortiz knocked in Dan Lyons for an RBI single. Josh Johnson walked to load the bases and Steve Lombardozzi continued his huge day with a shot off the top of the right-center field wall to clear the bases and the Nationals led 7-2.
The Red Sox put three across in bottom half of the third, thanks in part to a throwing error from Josh Johnson which led to one unearned run to cut the lead to 7-5.
However, the Potomac bullpen took it from there. Clayton Dill went two scoreless, Justin Phillabaum threw a 1-2-3 eigth inning and Dan Leatherman pitched a scoreless ninth for his eighth save of the season. With another RBI single from Will Ortiz, Potomac took game two 8-5. Dill picked up the win to improve to 5-5.
Steve Lombardozzi had a huge day with five hits, three doubles and four RBI to lead the way offensively in the two games.
After an off-day tomorrow, Potomac is back at it against Kinston on Wednesday. Potomac sends major leaguer RHP Jordan Zimmermann to the hill to face RHP Joe Gardner of the K-Tribe. First pitch is at 7:03.
