Rockies Bats Silenced in Nikorak's Debut

July 17, 2015 - Pioneer League (PL)
Grand Junction Jackalopes News Release

On Friday night at Kindrick Legion Field, Mike Nikorak allowed a run on three hits in his professional debut, but the Grand Junction Rockies were held to a season low one run on two hits in a 5-1 loss to the Helena Brewers.

Nikorak, the 27th player taken in this year's draft, pitched around a 2-out walk in the first, allowed a run in the second, and left in the third with two on base. He struck out the second batter he faced, Monte Harrison, for the first strikeout of his career. He threw 48 pitches, 23 for strikes.

Chad Zurat recorded the final out of the third inning, leaving two on base, keeping it a one run game, but Sam Hilliard started the fourth inning with his second home run.

Zurat kept Helena off the board in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but Helena regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh when they pulled off a double steal with runners at the corners, then against Dakota Behr, Helena added three more in the eighth.

The loss drops the Rockies to 15-14 on the season as they finish the year 3-4 against Helena.

Tyler Nevin had the only other Grand Junction hit, as the Rockies combined for 12 strikeouts.

Bobby Stahel finished without a hit, ending his hit streak at 10 games.
