RockHounds Fall in Finale to Hooks
August 5, 2019 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release
A high-level pitching matchup turned into a turned into a "football score" in the third inning as the Corpus Christi Hooks put seven runs on the board and went on to defeat the RockHounds, 10-3, Sunday evening at Whataburger Field.
For the second straight gamer Colling Theroux silenced the Whataburger Field crowd with a monster home run, this time a towering drive to left field, for a 1-0 RockHounds lead in the top of the third.
An inning-opening error in the home half of the inning was followed by back-to-back RBI doubles from Osvaldo Duarte and Anibal Sierra with a third run scoring when Sierra scored on a close play at the plate on a ground ball to third. J.J. Matijevic then continued his monster series (6-for-12, three home runs), sending a three-run home run out to left field, and Stephen Wrenn followed with a solo shot to left. The back-to-back home runs pushed the Hooks lead to 7-1.
Forrest Whitely, Houston's top pitching prospect, did not figure in the decision but went the first four innings for the Hooks, allowing one run on two hits (including Theroux's home run), walking two and striking out five. Grant Holmes, who was tagged with the loss, retired the first six batters he faced before the Hooks erupted for the seven run third.
The clubs split the four-game series with the 'Hounds taking the first two and the Hooks coming back with wins Saturday night and Sunday.
