Portland, Maine- Chris Parmelee hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield in the top of the ninth inning to lift the New Britain Rock Cats to a 5-4 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs before a sold crowd of 7,368 fans Saturday night at Hadlock Field.
For the second straight night the Portland Sea Dogs fell behind early but rallied to tie the game late. Down 4-2 in the seventh Chih-Hsien Chiang and Will Middlebrooks hit back-to-back doubles to bring the score to 4-3. Dening, for the second consecutive night, delivered the game tying hit with a RBI single.
The score remained tied until the ninth when Kyle Fernandes hit Chris Herrmann. Nathan Hanson followed with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by centerfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker. With runners at second and third with one out, Parmelee lifted a fly ball to straight away center scoring Herrmann for the game winning one. Fernandes (0-4) suffers the loss allowing the one run on one hit in 1.2 innings of work.
Spencer Steedley (3-2) earned the win for New Britain allowing one hit in 1.1 innings of relief. Matt Schuld earned his first save pitching a scoreless ninth.
New Britain starter Deinys Suarez retired 12 straight batters to open the game.
The Twins affiliate grabbed a 3-0 lead in second with RBI singles from Brian Dozier, Marc Dolenc, and Chris Hermann off Portland starter Chris Balcom-Miller.
Portland was able to break Suarez's streak in the fifth, striking for three hits and two runs. Chih-Hsien Chiang led off with a single, Matt Spring followed with a double and Dening delivered a two run single to bring the Sea Dogs within a run at 3-2. The Australian was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
New Britain responded with a run in the sixth with a RBI single off the bat of Deibinson Romero to extend the lead to 4-2. Balcom-Miller was lifted after the sixth having surrendered four runs on eight hits.
Chiang raised his average to .327 with a 2-for-3 performance and scored twice.
Portland and New Britain will conclude the series on Sunday at 1:00 PM at Hadlock Field. All-Star right-handed pitcher Stephen Fife (10-7, 3.59) will be on the mound for the Sea Dogs. The Rock Cats will counter with righty Bobby Lanigan (5-7, 3.96).
