Bowie Compiles Nine Unanswered Runs for Second Win in Series

BOWIE, MD - The Bowie Baysox (49-42) pounded out 13 hits and plated nine unanswered runs as they pranced past the Richmond Flying Squirrels (48-43), 9-2, in front of 7,011 at Prince George's Stadium on Saturday night. The win moves the Baysox back in front of the Squirrels for second place in the Western Division.

Richmond did get out quickly against Bowie right-hander Chorye Spoone. Spoone got the first two outs in the first inning, but Roger Kieschnick belted a solo-home run to right-center field to put Richmond in front, 1-0. Kieschnick's 10th home run of the season gave him the outright team lead.

The Squirrels added a run in the second when Wes Hodges led off with a single to left field. Johnny Monell walked behind him to put two aboard with nobody out. Hodges was eventually forced out at the plate, but Richmond held runners at second and third base with two outs. With Wendell Fairley at the plate, Spoone offered a pitch up and in that glanced off the mitt of catcher Steve Lerud. Juan Perez scored on the passed ball for a 2-0 advantage.

The lead evaporated in the bottom of the second inning. Squirrels' right-hander Daryl Maday worked a quick first inning, but immediately ran into trouble in the second. Joe Mahoney started that trouble with a single, which Lerud followed with a first-pitch single to put two aboard. Maday then fell behind Brandon Waring before Waring drilled a three-run home run to left-center field. Waring's 12th of the season gave Bowie the lead, 3-2.

Bowie immediately threatened again in the third, ultimately chasing Maday from the ballgame. Buck Britton opened the inning with a single, and Maday followed with a walk to Mahoney. Lerud then laced an RBI single into left field, giving Bowie a 4-2 lead. It was the final batter faced by Maday in the ballgame, as he was lifted in favor of left-hander Wilmin Rodriguez. Rodriguez was able to escape the inning without further damage done.

Maday (2-8) endured his eighth loss of the season in his shortest outing of the year. He surrendered four earned runs on seven hits over two-plus innings. He walked one and struck out two as he fell to the Baysox for the third time.

Spoone (4-5) settled in nicely, and earned the win over seven innings. He allowed only the two early runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out seven as he earned his fourth win of the year.

The Baysox added a run against Rodriguez in the sixth inning, and put the ballgame away with two more in the seventh. Rodriguez turned in his longest career relief appearance, sparing the majority of the bullpen, by turning in 4 1/3 innings. He was charged with three earned runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out five.

Bowie iced the win with two more runs against right-hander Jason Stoffel in the eighth inning. The uprising included an RBI triple from Xavier Avery and an RBI ground out from Greg Miclat.

Right-hander Wynn Pelzer handled a scoreless eighth inning for the Baysox, and right-hander Armando Gabino finished the ballgame with a scoreless ninth.

The finale of the four-game series is scheduled for 6:05 PM on Sunday night. RHP Justin Fitzgerald (6-4, 3.38) will make the start for the Squirrels against LHP Michael Ballard (4-0, 3.40) for the Baysox.
