
Rock Cats Falter in Ninth, Fall to Portland

New Britain, CT-ÃÂ The New Britain Rock Cats failed to hold a 3-2 lead in the 9 th inning and dropped a 7-3 decision to the Portland Sea Dogs in front of 5,166 at New Britain Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.ÃÂ The Rock Cats built a 3-0 lead over the first two innings and cruised behind starting left-handed pitcher Luke French who worked into the 7 th inning.ÃÂ New Britain reliever Daniel Turpen struck out the two batters he faced in the 7 th and pitched around a pair of singles in the 8 th .ÃÂ However, he was reached for 4 runs in the 9 th inning including four straight hits after retiring the leadoff hitter.ÃÂ Bobby Lanigan also surrendered a run in the 9 th for New Britain who dropped two of three to the Sea Dogs in the Hardware City.ÃÂ

"We jumped out to the early 3-0 lead and it was one of those games where we couldn't tack on any more offense, there pitcher (Chris Balcom-Miller) shut us down the rest of the way," Rock Cats manager Jeff Smith said.ÃÂ "French did a great job out there and (Daniel) Turpen came in and did well and just made one mistake with two strikes that ended up hurting him. That line score is going to look worse that it is.ÃÂ They got us today like we got them yesterday."ÃÂ

The Rock Cats scored the first run of the game in the first inning on a wild pitch by Sea Dogs starter Chris Balcom-Miller.ÃÂ New Britain made it 2-0 on a one-out run scoring double by first baseman Chris Colabello.ÃÂ ÃÂ The Twins affiliate made it 3-0 after a one-out walk to Nate Hanson would score on a groundout by Estarlin De Los Santos.

The Sea Dogs scored runs in back-to-back innings on a wild pitch in the 4 th and a 2-out RBI single by Derrik Gibson in the 5 th .ÃÂ Portland built a 5-run rally in the 9 th with a RBI singles from Dan Butler and Heiker Meneses and a 2-run single by Juan Carlos Linares.ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ
