Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - Andy Pettitte pitched into the sixth inning and allowed four runs on seven hits as the Erie SeaWolves took a 10-4 victory over the Trenton Thunder Wednesday night in front of 8,146 fans at Waterfront Park. The 10th-largest crowd ever to watch a game at the facility saw Trenton lose despite Cody Johnson's three-run home run and four-RBI night.
Pettitte (0-1) was sharp early, retiring nine consecutive hitters after the first two he faced reached on first-inning singles. Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, the SeaWolves mustered a leadoff walk and a one-out single against the veteran lefty, and Rob Brantly then blooped an RBI single to make the score 2-0.
Erie scored an unearned run off of Pettitte in the fifth after putting runners on second and third with no outs on Jamie Johnson's base hit and an error on third baseman Addison Maruszak. Brandon Douglas then singled to extend the SeaWolves lead to 3-0.
Pettitte's final pitch resulted in a leadoff single by Brantly in the sixth, and reliever Preston Claiborne later allowed him to score on Johnson's RBI groundout. Trenton responded in the bottom of the inning when Johnson clobbered a two-out three-run homer against SeaWolves starter Zack Segovia (1-2) that made the score 4-3.
Erie put the game away by scoring three runs in the seventh against Claiborne, then three more against Kelvin Perez (one earned) in the eighth that left the score 10-3.
Douglas went 3-for-5 with and RBI and a run scored to pace the SeaWolves 14-hit attack, while Brantly, Bryan Pounds and John Murrian each had two RBI. Segovia did not allow an earned run in his six solid innings of work.
The teams conclude the three-game series Thursday morning with a 10:35 am pitch at Waterfront Park. Thunder righty Craig Heyer (1-1) is expected to pitch against Erie southpaw Jared Wesson (1-1).
