Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
Reading, Pa - The Reading Phillies (13-5) blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels (8-11) for a second consecutive ballgame, winning, 1-0, in front of 2,510 at FirstEnergy Stadium on Wednesday night. The Squirrels have now been held without a run for 24 consecutive innings, dating back to the third inning of Sunday's series-finale in Altoona.
Steve Susdorf opened the second inning with a single into center field, and advanced to second base on an errant pickoff attempt from Richmond right-hander Chris Heston. A groundout from Jiwan James moved him to third base, and he scored for a 1-0 lead on a Tug Hulett sacrifice-fly lofted to left field.
Meanwhile, R-Phils' right-hander Trevor May (4-0) buzzed perfectly through the Richmond order the first time around. He retired the first nine batters he faced, four by way of strikeout. He walked Gary Brown in the fourth inning, allowing his first base runner, but quickly retired the next three hitters. He allowed just one hit, a single to Juan Perez in the fifth inning. In all, he fired six scoreless innings, earning his fourth consecutive win. He walked two and struck out seven.
Heston (1-2) was magnificent in his own right, but took a hard-luck loss over seven innings. He allowed just the lone run on six hits. He walked none and struck out seven - including four of the final five batters that he faced.
Right-hander J.C. Ramirez followed May and held the Squirrels at bay for two innings. Right-hander Tyson Brummett handled the Squirrels in order in the ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
The Squirrels and R-Phils complete their three-game series on Thursday morning at 11:35 AM. LHP Mike Kickham (1-1, 2.84) will make the start for the Squirrels against RHP David Buchanan (1-1, 2.37) for the R-Phils. Pregame coverage will begin at 11:05 AM on Sports Radio 910 and SportsRadio910.com .
