ROCHESTER RED WINGS GAME NOTES
SATURDAY, APRIL 21, 2012 w FRONTIER FIELD
GAME #17 - HOME GAME #9 - 1:05 P.M.
LEHIGH VALLEY IRONPIGS (11-5) at ROCHESTER RED WINGS (8-8)
RHP AUSTIN HYATT (2-0, 2.20) vs. LHP SCOTT DIAMOND (3-0, 1.47)
WELCOME TO THE ROC: The Rochester Red Wings today play the 2nd game of their 3-game series vs. Lehigh Valley (Phillies) and its Hall of Fame manager Ryne Sandberg. Following tomorrow's series finale, the Wings will enjoy Monday off and then welcome Bryce Harper and the Syracuse Chiefs (Nationals) to town for a 3-game series.
a Due to Game 2 of the Rochester Americans' first-round, best-of-5 playoff series against the Toronto Marlies, today's game can be heard on WYSL 1040 AM or FM 92.1. The 6-time Calder Cup champs lost Game One, 4-3, across the border on Thursday.
a The Red Wings are in the midst of playing 17 of their first 21 games at Frontier Field through April 26. Rochester is also playing 31 of its first 47 contests (66 percent) at Frontier through May 22, including all 8 of the "road" clashes with the Yankees.
a The Red Wings' first 39 games are within the IL North Division, a stretch that runs through May 14.
CAN'T TAKE THE WEEKENDS OFF: The Red Wings today are looking for their first weekend win. Rochester is a combined 0-4 on Saturdays and Sundays and 8-4 during the workweek. Speaking of which, the first Businessperson Special is Thursday, when the Red Wings host Syracuse at 11:35 a.m.
EXCITING STUFF: Four of the Red Wings' 8 wins have been of the come-from-behind variety, including last night's 5-2 triumph vs. Lehigh Valley. In each of the 4 come-from-behind victories, Rochester has rallied from 2 runs down. Not only that, each of the 4 comeback wins has come at Frontier Field.
MORE EXCITING STUFF: Fifteen of the Red Wings' first 16 games have been decided by 3 runs or less. Even with a 10-1 loss April 12 vs. Pawtucket, a save has been recorded in each of Rochester's 16 contests. Three different Rochester relievers have recorded at least one save, including Casey Fien (3), Tyler Robertson, and Anthony Slama, who is tied for the league lead with 4.
GETTING ABOVE WATER: At 8-8, the Red Wings are off to their best start since the 2007 club went 12-4 in its first 16 games. The Wings have spent all but 2 days at or above the .500 mark. They were 5-6 on April 15 after a 3-1 loss at Lehigh Valley and 7-8 on Thursday after a 5-3 setback at the Empire State Yankees.
a The Red Wings have played their first 18 games without a postponement due to weather, the longest such streak since 2002. The club's 18th game that year, an April 22 clash at Buffalo (Indians), was rained out and played as part of a doubleheader the next day.
a Rochester has gone 16 games into the season without playing extra innings, the longest such streak since 2003, when the Red Wings played 11 innings in their 31st game May 7 at Durham (Rays). The Wings won 4-3 that day.
OPEN SESAME: The Red Wings last night won their 4th series-opening game in 6 tries. Despite the success in those contests, Rochester has went on to win just one of its first 5 series. The Wings are 1-2-2 in series overall, and a win today or tomorrow would even up their series record at 2-2-2.
TOP AND BOTTOM: This weekend's series features 2 teams that are in the top 4 in pitching and bottom 5 in hitting. Lehigh Valley ranks 2nd in the International League with a 2.67 ERA and Rochester ranks 4th with a 3.21 ERA. On the hitting front, the Red Wings rank 10th with a .238 batting average while the IronPigs rank 12th with a .234 average.
SIGNS OF A TURNAROUND: The Red Wings have scored an International League-low 49 runs in 16 games, averaging 3.1 runs per contest. The Wings today look to climb out of the cellar, trailing Norfolk (Orioles) by 4 runs. Norfolk today travels to Batavia to take on the Empire State Yankees.
a The Red Wings last year scored 57 runs through their first 16 contests, but were one game worse at 7-9.
a Rochester last night banged out a season-high 11 hits for the 2nd time, matching their Opening Day effort at Syracuse.
a Rochester has hit just 7 home runs all year, including one in the last 7 games, courtesy of Michael Hollimon Thursday at Empire State. Only Empire State (6) and Durham (5) have clubbed fewer long balls.
a On a more positive note, the Red Wings have grounded into a league-low 7 double plays. The next closest is Toledo (Tigers) with 9. Rochester also is tied for the league lead with 6 triples with Gwinnett (Braves).
YELLOW DIAMOND IN THE LIGHT: Scott Diamond is the first Red Wings pitcher to win each of his first 3 starts in a season since Kevin Slowey turned the trick in 2007. In Slowey's 4th start that year, he allowed just one run in 7.0 innings at Toledo, but exited in a tie ballgame, which Rochester went on to win 4-1. The only other pitcher in the last 8 seasons to accomplish the feat is lefthander Dave Gassner in 2005 (online stats only go back to 2005).
a Diamond already has 3 wins after posting all of 5 victories in 2011, including 4 with the Red Wings and one with the Twins. Diamond is tied for the league lead in wins with Columbus' Corey Kluber and Pawtucket's Brandon Duckworth.
