Charlotte Knights News Release
(Fort Mill, SC) -- Charlie Shirek (3-1, 3.38) went seven innings and gave up only one run on three hits to pick up the victory as the Charlotte Knights defeated the Gwinnett Braves 3-1 Saturday night at Knights Stadium. The Knights move to 5-1 on their current homestand with one game remaining.
Neither team had a hit until Greg Golson lined one to center in the bottom of the third for Charlotte. Golson then stole second and Ray Olmedo drove him in with a single of his own to center field.
Gwinnett did not get their first hit until two outs in the fourth when Drew Sutton laced a double into left center field.
Josh Phegley stayed hot and got the Knights their second run in the fourth with a double to right center field that scored Conor Jackson from first base. Phegley now has a seven-game hitting streak and leads the team with a .373 batting average.
Dan Johnson hit a moon shot over the right center field wall in the sixth inning to increase the Knights lead to 3-1. It was Johnson's first home run of the season.
The Braves got runners on first and second with two outs in the ninth but Knights reliever Leyson Septimo got Jordan Parraz looking at a called third strike with a full count to end the game. Septimo gave up no hits and no runs in two innings to get his first save of the year.
Shirek became the first Knights starter with three wins this season and is now tied for first in the International League with four other players in wins. The Knights moved back over the .500 mark with their victory and now stand at 9-8 on the season.
The rubber game of the series is set for Sunday at 2:15. Dylan Axelrod (1-1, 1.56) is set to pitch for Charlotte (9-8) against Erik Cordier (0-0, 5.54) for the Braves. Sunday is the annual Bark in the Ballpark day at Knights Stadium. Fans can bring their canine companions to the game.
