Gwinnett Stripers News Release
FORT MILL, SC - The Charlotte Knights, behind the pitching of starter Charlie Shirek and reliever Leyson Septimo, defeated the Gwinnett Braves 3-1 in game two of a three-game series Saturday night at Knights' Stadium.
The G-Braves could only muster three hits on the night against the duo and could not score enough runs to back the pitching of Todd Redmond, who gave the club 5.2 solid innings.
Charlotte broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the third off of Redmond. Right-fielder Greg Golson lined a one-out single to center, stole second base and scored on a single by shortstop Ray Olmedo. The Knights added another run in the bottom of the fourth as Conor Jackson reached on a one-out single and scored from first on a double to right-center by catcher Josh Phegley.
The only run for Gwinnett came in the top of the fifth. Third-baseman Joey Terdoslavich walked to lead off the inning, moved to third on a double to right by left-fielder Christian Marrero and scored on a ground out to second by shortstop Josh Wilson. The run cut the Charlotte lead to 2-1.
But Dan Johnson, who hit 30 home runs while playing for Durham in 2010, got the run back in bottom of the sixth with a long solo homer to left center field off Redmond. It was his first homer of the season, and ended the scoring for the night.
Redmond (L, 1-2) gave up six hits and three runs, all earned, in his 5.2 innings of work. He walked two and struck out a season-high 10 batters. Right-hander Jaye Chapman worked 1.1 scoreless innings while striking out one. Right-hander Anthony Varvaro worked a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts.
For Charlotte, Shirek (W, 3-1) retired the first 11 batters of the game. He worked seven innings on the night, giving up three hits, one earned run, two walks and struck out four. The left-handed Septimo (S, 1) worked the final two scoreless innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
At the plate, G-Braves second baseman Drew Sutton went 1-for-4 with his fourth double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Right-fielder Jordan Parraz was also 1-for-4 with a single to extend his hitting streak to five games.
The G-Braves (12-5) and Knights (9-8) continue the six-game home-and-home series on Sunday afternoon in Fort Mill, SC. Right-hander Erik Cordier (0-0, 5.40) gets the start for Gwinnett. Charlotte pitches right-hander Dylan Axelrod (1-1, 1.56). Listen to the broadcast on WDUN AM 550 and FM 102.9 in Gainesville, GA with Tony Schiavone calling the play by play.
