Wichita Thunder News Release

Brampton, ON (February 17th) - Matt Robinson scored the go-ahead goal with 13 minutes remaining helping Wichita (21-21-4) defeat the Brampton Beast (24-21-5) by the final score of 4-2 on Monday afternoon at the Powerade Centre. Robinson finished with two on the night while Matt Summers and Jon Madden also found the back of the net for the Thunder. Wichita gets back to .500 and finishes the regular season-series against Brampton 3-3-0. The Thunder are five points back of the Beast and sit just three points shy of Arizona and Tulsa for the eighth spot.

Brampton used the momentum from yesterday's game and got on the board first just over a minute into the opening frame. Tylor Michel came down the left wing, made a stick-handling move at the left circle and beat Taylor Nelson for his 12th of the season. Wichita tied it seven minutes later when Jon Madden found a loose puck off the wall in the slot and he buried a slap shot past Kristopher Westblom for his fourth of the year with an assist to Erick Lizon. RG Flath almost made it 2-0 several minutes later as he caught a pass at the red line, split two Brampton defensemen and skated down the slot only to be stopped by Westblom. The two teams headed into the dressing room knotted at one after the first 20 minutes.

It didn't take the Thunder long to grab its first lead of the game early in the second. Jon Booras went for a wrap-around to the left of Westblom. As he lost the puck, Robinson pushed it past the Beast netminder to make it 2-1 at 1:11. Later in the second, Brampton pulled even when Matt Caurana made a nice play up the middle of the ice around a defender and beat Nelson over the shoulder at 14:04. The two teams entered the final period tied at two.

The Thunder's first power play came at 6:12 when Scott Howes was called for roughing near the bench area. Booras ripped a shot just wide of the right post. The long bounce came off the end wall and found its way to Robinson who put home his second of the night to make it 3-2. Shortly after, Howes was sent off for a 10 minute misconduct for abuse of officials. Wichita added an insurance goal at 12:21 as Summers roofed a shot from in-close to extend the lead to 4-2. Westblom was pulled later in the period, but the Thunder defense was too strong and walked out of the Powerade Centre with four points on the weekend.

Wichita out-shot the Beast in each game this weekend, firing 33 tonight and only allowing 28 on Nelson. Booras finished with two helpers while Andrew Martens and Mike Wilson each collected an assist. Nelson earned his 11th win of the year, stopping 26 of 28 shots. Westblom took the loss, stopping 29 of 33 shots.

Wichita went 1-for-2 on the power play. Brampton was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
