INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Matt Robertson's first-career hat trick lifted the Mavericks (34-30-3-2) to a 6-3 victory over the Tulsa Oilers (31-27-3-8) Monday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
Robertson's trifecta was the third three-goal game of the season for KC, the first two coming courtesy of Shawn Pauly. Mark Cooper also flashed his offensive prowess in the game, finishing with two goals and an assist.
The Mavs jumped out to a commanding lead in the opening frame as Robertson found the back of the net twice in the game's first 12 minutes and Jared VanWormer deposited his ECHL-best 14th power play goal of the season to make it 3-0 into the first intermission.
Kansas City kept it coming in the second thanks to the efforts of Cooper, who scored twice in a span of just over three minutes to build the lead to 5-0. The Oilers countered later in the frame, Roman Ammirato scoring two, his third and fourth of the season, to trim the Maverick edge to three as the game headed to the final 20 minutes.
The Oilers cut the Mavericks' lead to two at 8:07 of the third, a puck bouncing off Adam Pleskach's back and into the goal, but Robertson finished off his hat trick two minutes later to put the home team ahead safely at 6-3.
The Mavericks host the Indy Fuel tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. in a pivotal Central Division clash and the regular season home finale.
