
Roadrunners Rally Past WhiteWings

EDINBURG - The Edinburg Roadrunners scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to come from behind to beat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 6-4 on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The series shifts to Harlingen Field as the WhiteWings and Roadrunners play game four of this five-game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The first 500 fans age 16 and older in attendance will receive jersey koozies, courtesy of Boggus Ford. Gates open at 6:05.
With the Roadrunners (20-23) trailing 4-3 with one out in the bottom of the eighth, Robert Matlock reached on an infield-single against Danny Rondon (2-3). Gabe Memmert followed with a single and Osiel Flores hit an RBI-single to tie the game. After a passed ball advanced the runners, Stantrel Smith hit a go-ahead two-run single.
That made a winner of Corey Goudeau (2-5), who pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
Julio Castro pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save.
The WhiteWings (22-20) struck against James Giulietti in the top of the second. Pino and Gabriel Ortiz led off with singles and Carl Johnson executed a sacrifice bunt to set-up an RBI-fielder's choice by Brandon Decker to make it 1-0.
The Roadrunners responded right away against Alexander Concepcion before recording their first hit. With two outs, R.J. Harris drew an eight-pitch walk and Steven Wright drew a four-pitch walk. Brandon Wilkerson followed with a groundball to shortstop that went between the legs of Decker, allowing Harris to score to tie the game.
Matlock led off the bottom of the third with a walk and Memmert followed with the Roadrunners' first hit, a single moving Matlock to third. Flores grounded into a double play to score Matlock, making it 2-1.
Welington Dotel hit his fifth home run of the season leading off the fourth to make it 3-1.
The WhiteWings tied the game in the top of the fifth. Johnson led off with a single and Decker reached on a bunt-single. With no one covering third, Johnson took off for third. An errant throw was made, allowing Johnson to score and Decker to move to second. One batter later, Antonio DeJesus hit an RBI-single.
Pino stole home with two outs in the sixth to give the WhiteWings the lead.
