
Roadrunners Split Double-header With \'wings

EDINBURG, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners split the double-header with the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings with a 16-11 win in game one and a 4-2 loss in game two Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium in front of 3,792.
The Roadrunners (19-22) struck in the bottom of the first when Stantrel Smith hit an RBI single that scored Gabe Memmert from second base giving Edinburg the 1-0 lead.
After the Roadrunners extended their lead with a run in the bottom of the second, the WhiteWings hit back-to-back home runs taking the 3-2 lead.
Edinburg sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 12 runs while picking up eight hits in the bottom of the fourth. C.J. Beatty, Brandon Wilkerson, and Wellington Dotel highlighted the inning with a home run each helping to give the Roadrunners the 14-3 lead.
RGV (21-19) would add two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth before the Roadrunners added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run double by Memmert making it 16-8.
The WhiteWings scored three more runs in the seventh but Andrew Dowl got the final outs of the inning giving Edinburg the 16-11 victory.
Jorge Quintero (3-4) picked up the victory after pitching five and a third innings and allowing seven runs.
In game two, RGV (22-19) added single runs in the top of the first and second innings against Edinburg starter Blake Parry taking the 2-0 advantage.
Gerardo Avila hit a solo home run in the top of the third to make it 3-0 WhiteWings.
The Roadrunners (19-23) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth against Eddie Dennis Jr. R.J. Harris led off the inning with a double and then Steven Wright followed with a walk. After a balk moved runners to second and third, C.J. Beatty hit an RBI single scoring Harris and Wright cutting RGV's lead 3-2.
In the top of the seventh, RGV added an insurance run with an RBI double by Antonio De Jesus that extended their lead 4-2.
Edgar Martinez pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh for his 13th save giving the WhiteWings the 4-2 victory.
Dennis Jr. (1-0) picked up his first win after allowing two runs on six hits in five innings.
The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. James Giulietti (0-1) is expected to face Alexander Concepcion (4-3) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
