July 8, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Lake County Fielders News Release
The Lake County Fielders lost a close one to the Yuma Scorpions tonight, ending their four game winning streak with a 1-0 loss.
Zac Cline (2-4) got the loss for the Fielders, but he could not have pitched any better. He threw a complete game, only allowing one run on four hits with a season best nine strikeouts.
The only run Cline gave up was a fielder ¬â¢s choice from Jared McDonald in the 4th inning. With runners on first and third, McDonald hit a catchable fly ball to second baseman Brandon Newton, who dropped the ball but immediately threw it to second to get the force out. Carlos Leon ran home once he realized Newton dropped the ball, scoring the only run of the game.
The Fielders had plenty of opportunities to give Cline run support throughout the game, as they stranded 13 base runners and were walked 11 times by the Scorpions. The Fielders only had two hits tonight, a double by Argelis Nunez and a single by Rex Rundgren.
Their best scoring opportunity came in the 8th inning, after a Rex Rundgren single wound him up on third after two wild pitches thrown by tonight ¬â¢s winning pitcher Eric Stolp. Lino Garcia then walked to make it runners on the corners with nobody out, and Stolp was relieved by JJ Leaper to face Argelis Nunez, who popped out to the first baseman. C.J. Ziegler then walked to load the bases for Matt Mansilla, who struck out looking. Alan Rick, who was recently signed by the Fielders and played in his first game this evening, grounded out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 9th the Fielders once again had a golden opportunity, as Leaper walked the bases loaded with only one out. He eventually got Garcia to fly out and Nunez to ground out to end the game.
With the loss, the Fielders forfeited their first place standing, as the Edmonton Capitals are now .5 game ahead in first place. The loss also ends Lake County ¬â¢s perfect record against Yuma this season, as coming into the game they were 8-0 against the Scorpions.
The Fielders will look to bounce back from tonight ¬â¢s loss against Yuma tomorrow night at 7:00p.m in the fifth game of the series.
