Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
This past week was a tough schedule for the Road Warriors but they managed to collect 6 of 8 possible points. The team finished seven games in nine days dating back to November 2nd. On the entire span the team compiled 11 of 14 possible points which pushed them to second most points in the ECHL with 19.
Tuesday at Evansville IceMen
On Tuesday morning the Road Warriors topped the Evansville IceMen in a 4-2 victory. A sellout crowd was in attendance as Education Day brought in 9,381 fans to the Ford Center. Mike Marcou opened the scoring three minutes into the game. The powerplay goal was the defenseman's first of his professional career. Goalie Nathan Lieuwen came in relief of Scott Stajcer in the third period. Evansville would pull their goalie in the closing minutes and were not able to convert. While shorthanded, Brandon Wong scored an empty netter to seal the victory. Evansville would eventually add a goal on the powerplay but it was too late. Lieuwen would stop 9 of 10 shots in the third period. Stajcer would get the win stopping 15 of 16 shots.
Wednesday at Evansville IceMen
The Road Warriors scored four unanswered goals in the third period to complete a two game road sweep against the Evansville IceMen on Wednesday night. The IceMen had a 2-0 lead until Francis Verreault would bring the Road Warriors within one with a powerplay goal. The lead would return back to two goals as Evansville would score again 58 seconds later. As the third period began penalties began to be handed out and Brendan Connolly would then catch fire for the Road Warriors scoring a hat trick with two coming on the powerplay. Mike Marcou scored his second goal in as many games and Greenville outshot Evansville 13-4 in the final period. The Road Warriors finished the night 4-8 on the man advantage and killed all five Evansville powerplays. Lieuwen got his fourth consecutive win in net stopping 24 of 27 shots.
Friday vs. Cincinnati Cyclones
The Road Warriors took a 2-1 loss on Friday night against the Cincinnati Cyclones which put an end to the teams four game win streak and seven game unbeaten streak. Despite a penalty 19 seconds in, the Cyclones were able to kill it off and put 15 shots on net in the first period converting only one goal. The second period was more balanced as the Road Warriors outshot the Cyclones 9-6 but surrendered another goal. In the final frame while on the powerplay forward Kenndal McArdle would score the lone goal for Greenville. Lieuwen was the losing goalie which snapped his win streak at four games.
Saturday vs. Cincinnati Cyclones
The Road Warriors were the first team to beat the Cyclones in regulation on Saturday night by a score of 5-3. The first period began in the same fashion as last night with Cincinnati starting off the game with the lead. The Road Warriors would respond with a Rob Kwiet goal to tie the game. In the second period Greenville would take the lead with a goal from Kyle Haines, the first of his professional career. In the third period the Road Warriors and Cyclones continued to trade goals until the final minute when Cincinnati pulled their goalie. Sean Berkstresser added an empty-netter in the final minute to solidify the win for Greenville. Lieuwen got the win in net stopping 37 of 40 shots.
Week Ahead
The Road Warriors return to the EquilifeMD Rink at the BI-LO Center this Thursday against the Florida Everblades at 7 p.m. for Harvest Hope Food Bank Night presented by Fox Carolina. Fans can bring in three cans of nonperishable food and receive a ticket voucher for any December home game. The Road Warriors will also celebrate No Shave November presented by Greenville Hospital Systems to help raise awareness for prostate cancer. The game also features Throwback Thursday presented by 93.3 The Planet. Fans can enjoy draft beer, hot dogs, pretzels and fountain drinks for only two dollars. Streaks and Stats
-Dating back to 1/25/12 Brandon Wong has been held pointless in just 12 games. Including playoffs he has had 48 games played with 29 goals, 30 assists for 59 points.
-Since October 28 the Road Warriors have gone 12/48 on the powerplay (25%) and held without a powerplay goal just once in that nine game span.
-Brandon Wong's current point streak of eight games is tied for longest in the ECHL.
-Greenville is 6-1-1 against South Division opponents.
