Atlanta Gladiators News Release
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Greenville Road Warriors rode two second period goals to a 3-1 win over the Gwinnett Gladiators Sunday afternoon at the BI-LO Center.
It was the first time all season Gwinnett dropped a game in regulation when scoring first (17-1-1-0). Greenville (17-10-1-1) won its fourth game in a row, while the Gladiators (19-8-1-0) remain in first place in the South Division and Eastern Conference.
Gwinnett controlled the pace of play in the opening period, outshooting the Road Warriors 15-6. However neither team was able to find the back of the net.
The Gladiators took a 1-0 lead just 1:18 into the second period, as Dallas Jackson deflected a centering pass from Andy Brandt in on Missiaen, then lifted the rebound over the sprawled netminder for his seventh goal of the season. Jason Clark had the second assist, and now has four in five games as a Gladiator.
Early in the second period Road Warrior Jason Wilson skated into and elbowed Gwinnett goalie Mike Lee. Lee went after Wilson, and the Greenville forward received an extra penalty, but the Gladiators were unable to capitalize on the power play.
Greenville answered with two goals of their own later in the period. Defenseman Lee Baldwin tied the game at 5:52, and a Marc-Olivier Vallerand shorthanded marker at 8:46 that pushed Greenville to a 2-1 lead.
The Gladiators threatened several times in the third, and Jason Clark throttled Wilson in a fight, but the Road Warriors were able to hang on late. Bretton Cameron added an empty-netter in the final minute to ice the game.
Lee dropped his fourth straight start despite standing tall and keeping the Gladiators in the game. He finished with 25 saves. Jason Missiaen ended up with 38 saves for Greeville.
Gwinnett is next in action Friday December 21st in Reading at 7:05 p.m., as they face the Royals for the first time this season.
