Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC - Michael St. Croix earned three assists on Thursday and Josh Nicholls netted the game-winner with less than six minutes remaining as the Greenville Road Warriors (7-4-0-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, edged the Gwinnett Gladiators (5-4-0-0) in a 3-2 final at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
With the victory, the Road Warriors have won seven of their last nine games and move into first place (14 points) in the East Division. Greenville also improves to 3-1-0-0 at SANDLAPPER Securities Rink.
In net, Jeff Malcolm (5-2-0-0) made 22 saves and registered his fifth win in his last six starts. He has also allowed two goals or less for the fifth time in his last six.
Chad Nehring opened the scoring at 13:11 of the first period with his second power play goal of the season. With Nathan Burns in the box for slashing, Nehring grabbed a rebound created from a shot by Charles Roussel and lifted it top shelf over the glove of Gwinnett goaltender Adam Brown. The Road Warriors are now 5-0-0-0 when scoring a power play goal.
The Gladiators matched the score at 12:09 of the middle frame when Greg Carey slid a low shot under Malcolm from the door step for his fifth goal in the last two games.
Gwinnett grabbed its first lead of the contest just 35 seconds into the third period. From the left hash marks, Carey faked a shot and sent the puck across for Burns who one-timed it home for his first goal of the season. Greenville responded less than eight minutes later when St. Croix brought the puck in on an odd man rush and hit Ryan Hegarty on the left side for a wrist shot and his second goal of the season at 8:29.
Nicholls produced the final goal of the game at the 14:19 mark when he fired a shot from the right half-wall that slid past Brown with Nehring creating traffic in front. Nehring and St. Croix earned the assists for their second and third helpers of the game respectively.
Greenville finished the contest 1-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. Brown (2-1-0-0) made 30 saves and suffered the loss.
The Road Warriors also eclipsed the 30-shot mark for the seventh time in 11 games this season and outshot Gwinnett 33-24.
The Road Warriors return to SANDLAPPER Securities Rink at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. rematch against Gwinnett. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a free magnet schedule courtesy of Allstate agent, David Casey.
