Peoria Rivermen News Release

Houston, Texas - Steve Regier scored twice, including the game-winner, as the Peoria Rivermen beat the Houston Aeros 3-2 on Saturday night in front of 8,696 at the Toyota Center. Chris Holt started for the first time since Jan. 3 and made 30 saves in the win.

The Rivermen (23-20-1-1) split the weekend series with the Aeros (21-18-1-7) and have gone 2-2-0 in the first four games of a five-game trip. The win pushed the Rivermen into fifth place, only two points behind Rockford and Houston who are tied for second.

Despite being outshot 9-3 in the first period, the Rivermen held the Aeros off the board and entered the second period in a scoreless tie. An energetic start to the second period paved the way to a 2-0 Rivermen lead within the first five minutes. At 1:10, Chris Porter slammed home a Trent Whitfield rebound to open the scoring. It was the second goal of the season for Porter and his first since Oct. 25.

Regier added his first of the night at 4:18 just seconds after a power play had ended for Peoria. Before Brandon Rogers could race back into the play, Julian Talbot found Regier parked outside the crease and he tapped it past Nolan Schaefer for his 13th of the season.

The quick goals forced Houston to use their timeout to stop Peoria's momentum and the remainder of the period went scoreless.

The third period began with the Aeros drawing within one at 2:22. Benoit Pouliot's shot was partially blocked by a Rivermen defender and redirected underneath Holt and into the net. It came on the power play with Steve Wagner off for high-sticking.

Wagner turned the tables on a Rivermen power play at 9:59, assisting on what proved to be the game-winner. A Jonas Junland pass sent Wagner to the bottom of the left circle. His wrist shot was redirected by Regier on its way past Schaefer to give the Rivermen a 3-1 lead. The goal ended an 0-for-18 drought on the power play for Peoria.

Corey Locke scored his fourth goal in four games against the Rivermen at 16:11 to close the gap back to 3-2. His 17th of the year, came on the power play, after a pass across the crease from Matt Beaudoin.

Peoria held on for a win in a game that they were outshot 32-19. Houston finished 2-for-8 on the man-advantage while the Rivermen scored once on their five opportunities. The two teams will not meet again until the Rivermen return to Texas on March 21.

The Rivermen will be represented by Junland at the AHL All-Star Classic on Monday in Worcester, Mass. The game will be at 5 p.m. and available on FSN Midwest as well as online at www.AHLlive.com. Peoria's next game will be on Friday in Des Moines, Iowa as they face the Chops at 7:05 p.m. The radio broadcast will be available on Hippie 101.1 FM and online through www.rivermen.net.
