Albany River Rats News Release
ALBANY, NY - Justin Peters made 23 saves to earn his second shutout of the season as the Albany River Rats defeated the Rochester Americans 3-0 Saturday night at the Times Union Center.
Albany took an early 1-0 lead on the power play when leading scorer Michael Ryan fired home a wrist shot passed Rochester goalie Chris Beckford-Tseu for his 23rd goal of the season at 5:13; Jonathan Paiement and Nick Dodge assisted on Ryan's third power play tally in two nights. Midway through the frame Jerome Samson made it 2-0 River Rats on a hard wrist shot that caught a piece of Beckford-Tseu's glove, but popped over the mitt and into the net at 11:14. Albany out-shot Rochester 12-7 in the period and River Rats goaltender Justin Peters took a clean sheet into the intermission.
Neither team scored in the second period, but Peters had to be sharp as Rochester was given four straight power play opportunities in the frame. 4:21 into the third Albany scored their second power play strike of the game when Dwight Helminen batted a Bryan Rodney rebound out of mid air for his tenth goal of the season to make it 3-0; the assist extended both Helminen's and Rodney's point streaks to three games. The Americans failed to mount a sustained attack over the remainder of regulation, as the River Rats, bolstered by Peters' strong play between the pipes, were stronger on both ends of the ice. The final horn signaled Peters' second shutout of the season and the team's second straight win heading into the All-Star Break.
River Rats goaltender Justin Peters stopped all 23 shots he saw to earn the win and his second shutout of the season as Albany improved to 19-21-3-2 on the season. Rochester's Chris Beckford-Tseu allowed three goals on 23 shots and took the loss as the Americans fell to 15-26-0-4. Both teams registered 23 shots in the game; Albany went 2-for-4 on the power play and Rochester was 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
