Iowa Chops News Release

In front of the largest crowd of the season, the Iowa Chops scored the first goal, but San Antonio spoiled the party with three straight special teams goals to defeat the Iowa Chops Saturday night, 3-1 in front of 7,167 fans at the Wells Fargo Arena. The opening period was a back and forth affair and the best period of the game for the Chops, but both teams failed to find the back of the net thanks to strong goaltending by the Iowa Chops JP Levasseur and the San Antonio Rampage Josh Tjordman. The 2nd period was largely controlled by the visiting Rampage, who outshot the Chops by an eye-dropping 18-2. However, it would be the Chops who would score the game's first goal as Drew Miller took a pass and streaked down the right hand wing and sent a shot past Tjordman with assists to Matt Caruana and Brennan Evans. The San Antonio turned on the pressure and took advantage of some Chops penalties with two straight power play goals. The first came from All-Star Brett MacLean who tipped home a drive from the point. The second came off a loose puck in front as the Chops could not clear and David Schlemko, pinching from the point, smashed one past Levasseur for a 2-1 lead after two periods. The Chops didn't fare much better in the 3rd period, as the power play stalled and San Antonio added a shorthanded goal from Joel Perrault to put the game out of reach at 3-1. The night ended in grand fashion as the specialty jerseys the Chops wore during the game were auctioned off for charity, benefitting the MDA of Iowa.
