Rivermen Receive Akim Aliu from Atlanta

Peoria Rivermen General Manager Kevin McDonald has announced that the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers have reassigned forward Akim Aliu (AL-ee-oo) from the Gwinnett Gladiators (ECHL) to the Rivermen.

Aliu, 21, has played 43 games this season with the Chicago Wolves and contributed nine points (four goals, five assists) and 53 penalty minutes. Most recently, he has 20 points (12 goals, eight assists) in 16 games for the Gladiators.

Originally selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round (#56 overall) in the 2007 draft, Aliu played his first full professional season last year with the Rockford IceHogs. He appeared in 48 games he totaled 17 points (11g, 6a) and 69 penalty minutes. He was traded from Chicago to Atlanta on June 24, 2010 in deal that sent Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager, Brent Sopel and Aliu to Atlanta in exchange for Marty Reasoner, Jeremy Morin, Joey Crabb, a 1st and a 2nd round selection in 2010

A native of Okene, Nigeria, he also registered 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 13 games for the Toledo Walleye (ECHL) during his rookie campaign. Before turning pro, Aliu played in the Ontario Hockey League and registered 167 points (76g, 91a) and 407 penalty minutes in 205 games.
