Peoria Rivermen News Release

Peoria, IL (February 7, 2006) - On Tuesday evening at Carver Arena, the Peoria Rivermen and the Syracuse Crunch engaged in a simple, no-frills defensive struggle, as both squads played a good close-to-the-vest defensive game. Fortunately for the Rivermen, they came out on top, generating just enough offense to beat the Crunch by a score of 1-0. The lone goal of the contest came off the stick of Peoria winger Brendan Brooks during a first-period power play. The Rivermen were able to win with just that one goal thanks to the efforts of netminder Reinhard Divis, who stopped all 24 of the shots that he faced from the Syracuse squad.

Divis' shutout of the Crunch on Tuesday evening was his first shutout of the 2005-06 season. The goalie from Vienna, Austria, had an easy time of it through the first two periods of this game, as Syracuse was able to squeeze off only five shots on goal in the initial frame and then six more in the second. The Crunch really came after Divis and the Rivermen in the third period, however, as Syracuse mustered 13 shots on goal during the final session. All in all, Divis faced 24 shots and saved every one.

The whitewash win by Divis extended the goalie's personal winning streak to five starts. His winning streak dates back to Tuesday, January 17, when he made 28 saves on 31 shots in backstopping the Rivermen to a 4-3 shootout win at San Antonio. His next start came on Sunday, January 29, in Omaha, and Divis on that day helped Peoria to the franchise's first-ever overtime win with 25 saves on 27 shots. Last Friday at Toronto, Divis turned aside 26 shots on goal from the Marlies to contribute to a 6-4 Peoria triumph, and last Saturday afternoon in Cleveland, he made 15 more stops in Peoria's 3-2 defeat of the Barons.

The Rivermen with the win move to 27-18-1-2 on the season and to 15-8-0-1 at home. The Crunch, by comparison, drop to 28-18-2-1 overall and to 14-13-1-1 on the road.

The Rivermen converted a power play to establish an early lead in this game. Collecting the puck in the right corner of the Syracuse zone, Peoria left wing Charles Linglet wheeled away from the boards and sent a bee-line pass to right wing Brendan Brooks in the high slot area. Brooks then one-timed the nice feed past the stick of Crunch goalie Andrew Penner at the 6:01 mark of the first period for his 10 tenth goal of the campaign and the lone tally that the Rivermen would need for a 1-0 victory.

The Rivermen now get to enjoy three days off before venturing up to Michigan to take on the North Division-leading Grand Rapids Griffins at 6:00 p.m. (CST) on Saturday evening at Van Andel Arena.
