Admirals Face Very Hairy Week
February 7, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Milwaukee Admirals News Release
OVERALL...The Admirals enter this week's action with a 31-12-4-1 record, good for 67 points and second place in the West Division. The Admirals are four points behind the first-place Houston Aeros (71 pts). Milwaukee has won three of their last four games and has just one regulation loss in their last 12 contests (9-1-2). After returning home from Houston this week, the Admirals start a stretch of 10 of 12 games and 15 of 18 on Bradley Center Ice.
VS. HOUSTON... The Admirals and the Aeros will play the second of back-to-back games at the unusual time of 11 am on Tuesday. The reason for the strange starting time is that the Aeros are hosting a kid's game in conjunction with the local schools. The Admirals are 3-1 versus Houston so far this season, including an exciting 6-5 shoot-out win on Saturday night. All-time versus the Aeros the Admirals are 42-24-2-6 and 21-14-1-4 in Houston. The Ads also own a 10-3 mark in their last 13 meetings versus the Aeros in Houston.
VS. IOWA...Milwaukee and Iowa play a home-and-home series this Friday and Saturday. The two squads will square off at the Bradley Center on Friday before playing in Des Moines on Saturday night. The Ads are 4-1-0-1 versus the Stars thus far this year, including a 2-0 mark at the Bradley Center and a 2-1-0-1 record in Iowa. The last time these two teams hit the ice the Admirals came away with a 4-2 win at the BC on January 5. Iowa's Head Coach, Dave Allison, was the Admirals bench boss for two seasons in 2000-01 and 2001-02. Milwaukee Coach Claude Noel was an assistant for Allison during those years.
VS. CHICAGO... The Ads and Wolves renew their rivalry this Sunday at 4 pm at the Bradley Center. The Admirals are 5-1-1 versus the Wolves this year, including a 2-0 mark on home ice. The Admirals came away with a 6-4 victory at the All-State Arena on January 21, the last time these two teams faced off. In 119 lifetime meetings with the Wolves the Admirals own a 64-41-1-13 record, including a 37-19-0-5 mark at the BC. Of those 119 games, 87 of them have been decided by one or two goals with Milwaukee posting a 49-25-13 record in those contests.
LAST WEEK... The Admirals picked up three of a possible four points last week in two games versus the top two teams in the Western Conference. Friday night, the Ads suffered a tough 5-4 OT loss to Grand Rapids. Rich Peverley's goal at the 9:45 mark of the third gave Milwaukee a 4-3 lead, but the Griffins Darryl Bootland tied the game at four with just 1.6 seconds reamaining. Bryan Helmer finished the deal for Grand Rapids when he scored just 1:24 into OT. On Saturday night Scottie Upshall almost single handedly beat the Houston Aeros as he scored his second hat trick (3g) of the season, added an assist, was +4 and, to top it off, scored in the shoot-out in the Ads 6-5 win. Brian Finley set a Milwaukee season high with 47 saves in the contest.
A VERY HAIRY NIGHT... The Admirals will host their first-ever "Hairiest Back Contest" this Friday night at the Bradley Center. The contest is free to enter and open to anyone 18 years and older. The winner will win a Funjet Vacations trip for two to Las Vegas. The hairiness begins at 6 pm in the East Atrium of the Bradley Center. Nationally renowned comedian Dobie Maxwell will head the panel of judges and the final three contestants will be brought to center ice during the first intermission where the fans will decide the winner.
WEEKLY HONORS... Admirals forward Scottie Upshall was selected as CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week last week. In two games, Upshall posted six points (4g-2a), including a hat trick, and was +5 as the Admirals picked up three of a possible four points versus the top two teams in the Western Conference. A member of the Admirals 2004 Calder Cup Championship Team, Upshall has 29 points (16g-13a) and is an impressive +14 in only 14 games with the Ads this season. He has played in 32 contests with the Predators this year, posting 13 points (4g-9a) and 28 penalty minutes.
THREE-IN-THREE...This weekend the Admirals will play three-games-in-three-nights for the sixth time this season. The Ads will host the Iowa Stars on Friday night before hopping a bus to Des Moines to battle the Stars again on Saturday. They then get back on the bus for a 4 pm tilt with the Chicago Wolves on Sunday afternoon. So far this year Milwaukee is 9-4-2 in three-in-three sets and 22-7-2-1 when they are not playing three straight games.
NICE TRICK...Upshall's hat trick on Saturday night versus Houston was his second three-goal game this season marking the first time since the 2000-01 season that an Admiral's player notched two hat tricks in the same season. That year Ville Peltonen picked up a pair of hat-tricks for Milwaukee. Saturday's game was also the 19th straight game that the Admirals won or tied when one of their players scored three times. The team's last loss with a hat trick on their side was on January 18, 1997 versus the Kansas City Blades.
TOO, TOO MUCH... Right Wing Jordin Tootoo's stellar play recently earned him another recall to the Predators. In 27 games with the Admirals this season, the 5-9, 194-pound right wing has posted 17 points (9g-8a), a +7 rating and 63 penalty minutes. Tootoo has posted six points (1g-5a) and a +5 rating in14 games with Nashville this season. He appeared in 70 games with the Predators in 2003-04 and led the club with 137 penalty minutes.
WELCOME BACK... The Predators have reassigned left wing Jeremy Stevenson to the Admirals. Stevenson, 31, has seven points (4g-3a) and 74 penalty minutes in 35 games with Nashville this season. The San Bernadino, CA native spent parts of two seasons with Milwaukee back in 2000-01 and 2001-02. In 113 career games with the Ads, Stevenson posted 48 points (28g-20a) and 454 penalty minutes.
WESTWARD HO... Milwaukee has made their hay versus West Division opponents thus far this year, posting an impressive 23-7-1-1 mark against intra-divisional foes and outscoring them by a 115-82 margin. Milwaukee has been particularly impressive at the Bradley Center with an 11-2 record against the West. Versus the North Division the Ads have not been quite as good, recording a 7-5-3 mark.
BACK-TO-BACK SUCCESS... The Admirals have been quite successful this season when playing the same team in two consecutive games. The team is 10-1 in those contests this year, including 7-0 on the road. That record includes the first game of a back-to-back set that the Ads played with Houston on Saturday night. The Admirals will play another pair of games against the same team when they play the Iowa Stars this Friday and Saturday.
OVER THE AIR AND ON THE WEB... The Admirals have a new flagship radio station this season in Milwaukee's ESPN Radio 1510 AM (days)/1290 AM (nights). Aaron Sims will call all of the hard-hitting end-to-end action. In addition, the team has a one-hour hockey magazine dubbed "Milwaukee Admirals Center Ice" that airs every Tuesday from 6-7 pm on ESPN Radio. Fans can watch all Admirals games, home and on the road, live on the internet via B2 Networks. Simply go to the Admirals Website at www.milwaukeeadmirals.com
