Rivermen Get Shut Out in Wheeling 1-0

Wheeling, W.Va. (November 14, 2004) – The Peoria Rivermen continued their struggles on Sunday afternoon in Wheeling, W.Va., getting shut out 1-0 by the Wheeling Nailers on the strength of 29 saves from Dany Sabourin in front of 2,211 at WesBanco Arena.

Peoria has lost three in a row in regulation, dropping the first three games of their five-game, nine-day road trip.

Sabourin (5-2-0) stopped all 10 Peoria shots in the final period with several coming from in close in the second half of the session. In all, the fifth-year goaltender turned away nine shots in the first period and 10 in the second stanza for his third shutout in eight starts.

Peoria (2-4-2, 6 points), two games below .500, remains in last place in the eight-team North Division. Wheeling (5-6-0, 10 points), just a game under .500 now, improved to 4-2-0 on home ice and snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory.

It was the first of nine meetings between the Rivermen and the Nailers this season and the first of five at WesBanco Arena.

Peoria goaltender Alfie Michaud (1-3-1) stopped 28 of 29 chances in defeat.

The Nailers netted the only goal of the game at 3:26 of the second period. All-Star left wing Jason Jaffray, who took a pass from Alex Rouleau in the right wing corner, fed Kenny Corupe at the right hash mark in the slot for a one-time slap shot goal between the legs of Michaud. It was the second tally of the season for Corupe.

On Tuesday, November 16, the Rivermen travel to Reading, Pa. to battle the Royals in the first of eight meetings on the year in the third game of their five-game, nine-day road trip. Game time is 4:05 p.m. CT at WesBanco Arena.
